I gotta say I'm fairly unimpressed.
When I came up with the concept of a squeeze back/side input years ago, I thought about it as a solution to replace the power button, volume rocker, and camera shutter. The whole reasoning was to create a device which was much thinner, with smaller sides, and to make it symmetrical.
The HTC U11 achieved none of that, and the feature itself was very /meh. It literally feels like a gimmick that was tacked on halfway through, instead of thoughtfully used in the UX design.
The 2017 Pixel(s) will be the same.
Now, I rather phones have a bit of a side and decent thickness. This is to make the device more durable. Allow the proper use of glass protectors, and avoid accidental touches. A side effect is the flush camera lens and much larger battery and heat dissipation.
