I don't mind cutout but it has to be functional.. In the Essential case, the screen next to the selfie camera can be use as the in-app buttons like media playback, camera menu and navigation.. In the Apple cutout tho, there's already enough function in the cutout so it's fine..the two-horn display can also accommodate in-app buttons.. Samsung implementation of no cutout is also good, with almost slim top bezels but bottom I'd say need a big bigger for hardware button but that's just me nitpicking.. All of this is just my opinion tho :)
Anonymous, 25 Sep 2017I think it's fine and aesthetically pleasing. 16:9 videos won't be affected by it. As long as ... moreAnd what about web pages, genius? when you zoom in, you won't be able to see the text in that area
If they remove the chin and have an inverted Sharp Aquos Crystal, with the chin above the screen and having all the cameras and sensors it could solve the issue. We still have a bezel less phone with the camera in the right place unlike the Mi Mix which has camera at bottom. And since the 3 software buttons are on screen, it shouldnt be an issue if the screen extends right to the bottom.
A wonderful idea! Oh wait no it's a facepalm the size of our solar system... You cannot use that leftover screen when watching videos, playing games, checking pictures, hell even a simple webpage will be miserably looking. It's just ridiculously horrendous.
I think it's fine and aesthetically pleasing. 16:9 videos won't be affected by it. As long as camera apps exclude the viewfinder from it, I don't think it will be a problem.
Rafe Firmani, 25 Sep 2017I always hate the impotency of iCrap bluetooth file transfer, but I DO think the cutoff and fr... moreThe innovation you're talking about is borrowed from the Essential Phone and maybe Sharp Aquos S2 which are both android phones :)
So again, apple didn't bring anything new with this line of design. The problem is that the Essential Phone is known only in the US, while the S2 is available mostly in Asia, this being the only advantage the iPhone has.
I always hate the impotency of iCrap bluetooth file transfer, but I DO think the cutoff and front design with symetrical bezel is BRILLIANT!
Don't you just kinda stuck to see generic bezelless android phones like S8, Note8, Mimix2, LG V30...? all with it's bezelless but squarish look... BORING!
You want innovation? That's iPhone X front design innovation, and the horns is just cute trademark.
Hate the camera hump on the back and no biometric FP sensor, so I wont make my first jump to iPhone just yet.
Cram an entire Kinect on iphone X. The cutouts fail to pull interest on iphone X. Made iphone 8 looks exactly alike from previous model. Then, chinese phone seller cracked a big hole on iphone 8's rear glass trying to install security tag on its back for the first day of sales. Lol. I also read on news Apple new iphone queue have slimmer line this year. Such a great start for Apple this month. All the best. May god of innovation bless you.
Cutouts look ugly bit round corners looks elegant, so Samsung way all the way
It may be okay for iPhone since they all have same cutout and same OS, which means they can all have same usage for the extra screen space (for notifications, for example), but it is rather bad for Android phones - every phone tries to reinvent the cutout area and use it differently. You never know what you'll get. While I'm against cutouts in general, rounded corners are okay-ish. They don't make much of an impact (as long as they don't end up hiding a portion of the app that was supposed to be visible in a corner).
The essential sticks out like a sore thumb.
The iphone x sticks out like a sore it's-just-a-small-bar-blocking-your-videos-what's-the-big-deal.
Sony Fanboy Bitches, 24 Sep 2017I don't hate changes, but do it for the better. I can't see anyone benefiting too much from a ... moreHaha...you are lying, typical crapny fanboy. Your mentioned 4K HDR IPS LCD is only good in paper. My friend have XZ premium and he regrets his decision to buy this phone because he tired of looking at its low quality screen where are colors are dull and washed out. You should also look at XZ premium review where its contrast ratio is just 1200. Even chinese midrange phones are better than this. For a 5.5" screen,
FullHD resolution is the sharpest an human eye can see. Some companies use QHD displays in their phones for VR purposes. But, crapny use 4k screen in a phone that don't support VR is just to ask premium price from users. There is no benefit of having a 4k resolution over fullHD in a 5.5" screen.
Those cutouts are a hindrance while watching videos.. Apple could have went in Samsung's way, have a small enough bezel just to accommodate all those tech. Agreed that would make iPhone X little taller but will look nice without the cutout. Hope the competition finds a better solution than having a cutout.

MdN8, 24 Sep 2017Actually very early phones did it first before they were smart. Nokia had Pop Port, Sony Erics... moreYes obviously.. I was just pointing out the article error..
i think its just stupid and looks ugly, i want a phone with bezels but sadly these are becoming rare nowadays.
Not at all trendsetter.saw the xiomi mix already even though I didn't get it
At least the Essential phone cutout is not visible when viewing videos unlike the iPhone X.
