Nokia had Pop Port, Sony Ericsson had its own connector, Samsung too, no one had a proper headphone jack or a standard USB cable so you needed to buy an adapter to listen to music. Motorola was the first with MiniUSB on the RAZR but I can't remember the first headphone jack. Maybe Siemens.

I like iphone X cutout better than essential (dont know why) but rounded corners are way better than cutouts and os should mask cutouts like display status bar where cutout is so when you are watching movie it doesnt distract you

It shows complete and utter lack of imagination. Samsung simply provided a slightly thicker top bezel on the S8 and Note8, creating lovely devices.

Watching videos or viewing photos on the X looks awful, even in official Apple videos.

Essential screen is a lot nicer, it's bezels are narrower, but the cutout still looks wrong.

Cut it out, Apple! People have spoken. Majority dont like the cutouts. It stupid just like Essential except iphone X is doing it even worst. I never agree with this cutouts screen since I had seen LG V10. That camera cutout for secondary screen is the worst thing LG invented. We are fine with rounded corners and thats it. No more cutting corner here and there. Please. Imagine tv manufacturer start cutting the screen to make small cutouts for on/off button or volume button.

AnonD-299946, 24 Sep 2017The iPhone X's cutout is weird, why not just have a completely bezelless bottom and a 5mm top ... moreCan agree with that, only that if this happened, the top corners would be smaller than the bottom corners. I think Apple finally has to make the corners less rounded, not like Xperia XZ1, but like Galaxy S8 or maybe even Note 8.

The closer the screen is to a perfect rectangle, the better. LG V30 and Note8 seem to have the best formula. There the bezel are very small, yet the screen is close to a perfect rectangle (with slightly rounded corners), there is no cutout, and the selfie camera is in the right place (unlike the Mi Mix).

The Note8 is arguably the more impressive of the two, since it has a higher STB ratio while still incorporating a better selfie camera and a more complex Iris (& Infrared) Scanner too in thin upper bezel.

Also, both the V30 and the Note8 retain highly useful features such as the 3.5 mm headphone jack, which ironically cannot be said for the flagships of the 3 other smartphone makers depicted in the thumbnail (namely Apple, Essential & HTC).
