And this is no turd; the camera is vastly superior and the OS is set up for much smoother operation.

That's not enough, even the price-stable iPhone 7 went down more with iPhone 8 release. And it is stupid to buy a phone just for it's camera. The only thing not replaceable or expandable is performance and OS (even though you can flash a different ROM on Android, but it's still Android)
