The phone has this name because of the operator, like the article said. Here in Portugal, Optimus has been around for many years, around 2000 (the year, not the number of years), if I remember. A lot before LG launched the line of phones with that name.
By the way, the LG Optimus phones are called "Maximo" here instead of "optimus" exactly because that name was already taken, and I guess LG wanted to be able to sell through the other Portuguese operators too.

the name comes from the carrier... it will also be known as orange stockholm, on orange.
But the carrier was probably called optimus before the LG series... so its kinda like LG has less rights to the name.
