For the things people that most people do (instagram, messaging, FB) this aspect ratio is immensely bigger a.k.a. holds more information than a 16:9 screen.
So yes, they're the same in square inches, but it would feel bigger in actual use... especially as more apps gain support of it...
Think of iphone 7 plus. Now think bigger when messaging or instagraming. Because that's what this screen is for, late 2010s crows... iPhone 7 and 7 plus were thought off for early 2010s needs...
Now if you don't message and depending on your use (say watching a lot of youtube videos) it would feel smaller ... that is until more apps (including youtube) gain support of it.

The device is narrower and taller and it's pretty awkward. Anyway, the iphone X as a device is small, as small as an iPhone 7 almost. Not good for someone like me who's used to bigger phones. Just my opinion anyway

But actually bigger in things that tall matters, like Netflix, (soon) games (controls would be out of screen center) and messaging.
Quite smaller in 16:9 content though (which is ever dwindling, even youtube would support 21:9 content as well)

Yeah the diagonal is 5.8", but simple geometry tells us you can't compare diagonals when the aspect ratio is different. A 5.8" 18:9 screen has about the same surface area as a 5.2-5.3" 16:9 display. Look it up or calculate it yourself, it's not very hard using Pythagorus' theorem

What are you drinking? This is the largest screen ever existed on an Apple phone and finally closer to the android average without making the phone unseemly (like those darn androids that you cannot pocket).

This device is amazing, I got to play with one today. The materials are unmatched on any phone especially the stainless steel band just oozes quality. The only problem is this is a small phone, the screen and the device itself are just too small for an iPhone Plus user or someone who used any 16:9 5.5" phone. I hope a Plus model will come sooner rather than later.

It's completely different tech and what apple is using is unique in the mobile phone industry and way way ahead of anything on Android at the moment.
Putting many different types of biometric authentication systems on a phone would just increase the price of the phones unnecessarily.
