Being a long time SONY fanboy (14 years) I feel bad every time when I see someone blindly protect the company.
I can clearly see that right now Kaz doesn't really care about mobile division.

I find no issues with Sony's design, but just after everyone has turned to bezel less, every people now wants Sony to follow suit. Maybe showing how well people really love Sony, that they want them to do it, too?
For shooting stills, Xperias are fantastic in daylight. No one could beat them in daylight stills. If you want low light, others do better, but Xperias are no slouch.
And hopefully next year, their deal with a US carrier would end and would give Sony the chance to fully unlock the fingerprint reader to all models in all regions.

Sorry dude, not gonna happen.
They will make a bezel less flagship, but will do it better than the rest, I just don't know how, yet.
Oh, and Mirai points to a drastic Xperia design change to bezel less.
I would blame that for their reluctance to improve their design. Maybe learn a little from samsung and apple?
Their mobile cameras are behind as well. I want to snap a photo at night without a tripod and messing with manual settings.
960FPS is cool, but 99% of time I use the camera for taking photos or plain video.
And what about that non-working fingerprint in US? One has to play with flashing firmware from other region? Doesn't sound like fun at all.
king xperia, 01 Nov 2017 Being a sony fan, i seriously think sony should abandon there cybershot/portable camera d... moreYes I do think the same.
Back in the Z to Z2 era, they have pushed their smartphone camera technologies by a lot.
I can still remember how the Xperia Z2 destroyed the Galaxy S5 in low light shooting, but now it seems like Samsung is kicking Sony's *ss easily. It's very sad for me to say it, but I have to.
I guess after both the Z2 & Z3 became excellent smartphone cameras on their time, they have realized that their point-and-shoot camera lineups have declined in sales, hence decided to stop pushing the boundaries for their smartphone camera technology.
Their current cameras are still great, but not up-to-par. They stood still, thinking they are still leading in cameras, and unnoticed that others have come a very long time to improve and beat them.
They were just supposed to improve on the Z3, like adding OIS, brighter aperture, slightly less megapixel for larger pixels (16mp would do), and improve the post processing. But they skipped. Idk what they're planning next year, so just best-of-luck to them.
Sincerely,
A thorough Sony fan

Which is what I've been saying the last couple of months was going to happen. The world don't want bezels, even though the absolute tiny minority of the sony users, the sony fanboys, had all the excuses in the world why Sony should stick with bezels. Samsung leads, the rest follow.... bezel-less 18:9 baby.

The only way to make their smartphone cameras top notch is to stop their point-and-shoot camera lineups, but I doubt they'll do it."
Sony is late in every innovations since 2012.
Yet to introduce a dual camera smartphone or 18:9 bezel-less design, despite having own manufacturing facility to manufacture both Camera & Display.
Hope Sony will bring both of them in 2018 IFA, but at the same time Samsung & Huawei may had brought something new to S9 & P11. Sony will those features to X series in 2020 :p

I mean, it's obvious they are gimping there smartphones in favour of digital cameras but eventually, portable cameras will still die in a few years so what's the sense in what they are doing at the moment? The earlier they consider doing this the faster they can regain smartphone market share and probably be a dominant force in the biz considering they have great experience in designs and camera.
Times are changing and sony should do the same cos we are no more in the 90's.
My humble opinion folks! Have a great day.
AnonD-625621, 01 Nov 2017Grainy cameras... even on flagship. Corner softness even in flagship. Poor loud speaker even d... moreCameras can't be grainy. Should you say that images and videos are grainy, not the cameras; two different things lol. And it's just grainy because they do heavy sharpening that, while improves the quality (almost a DSLR against others in sharpness), also makes noise more visible. Not a fan of it either, but without pixel peeping, I doubt you'll see it.
Corner softness? What? Recently checked the XZ1's images and everything is sharp from one corner to the other and all over the whole composition. Heck, even Samsung cameras have slight corner softness, too. It's not just with Sony, and I can also say that other camera phones suck because of it, but if I didn't call them bad, there's also no reason to call the same problem to be "bad" on Sony phones.
Poor speakers? Have you even tried them? Sorry dude, there's no way a stereo front speaker is poor. Heard the XZ Premium's stereo speakers for once, and no way I'll ever go back to a mono. Just settling rn for a mono speaker phone, but my next phone would be stereo. It's not the loudest, yep, but how loud do you want your phone to be?
Like, you're gonna use your phone's speaker as an Ambulance siren or what?
And I have no idea where did that thing came out of. Poor display?
I'm starting to think you're just st*p*d. XZ Premium's 4K HDR screen is still legendary and unique on its own. Samsung AMOLEDs are great, but no better than the XZ Premium; it's the best screen ever put on a smartphone as of now IMO.
Oh, last time I've checked, Samsung's recent smartphones got issues with burn ins, and color shifting at an angle (not as bad as LG's P-OLED, but it's there and can be seen easily). XZ Premium was receiving huge praises for the display quality, that they would even trade in any OLED for it.
Apparently they are making profits even for a bit, as shown here. They didn't do that well this year because of drastic design change, a.k.a. "bezel less" in which Sony wasn't able to adopt to early enough. Wait for Mirai and you'll see how wrong you are, again.
Man I love sony phones, I hope things get better for them. They need to spend more money on R&D of smartphone camera. All else is good.

Of course the simple answer is that they aren't doing it, nor even planning to do it.
If you can see, Sony could easily make the best camera smartphone whenever they want to do it, but like I've said, it would hurt the sales of their point-and-shoot cameras like their Cybershot and RX100. The only way to make their smartphone cameras top notch is to stop their point-and-shoot camera lineups, but I doubt they'll do it.
AnonD-397942, 01 Nov 2017Sony lacks of advertising and the prices of the phones, other than that is great. I hope sony ... moreAnd the fact that their phones:
- almost never have a unique (and actually useful) feature when they come out
- are never among the cheapest
- don't have fingerprint scanners in the US
- have been using a very similar design for 6+ years
And, on top of that, Sony's customer service is awful (at least, in the US)
I really don't think they stand a chance against the chinese and koreans if they don't make very big changes soon
60ez, 01 Nov 2017i dont think so. sony's slowmo is half baked. useless because it only last for 0.2 second. Well, how should I call others that can't record 960fps @720p slow motion EVEN FOR A MICROSECOND?
Half-baked it may be, everything new pretty much undergoes in that stage. Same thing was said for Fingerprint Scanner and look at it now. The thing is that it is Sony that pushed the boundaries of what we could imagine a smartphone could do.
Maybe next year, it will be extended to maybe 1 minute.
Sony Fanboy Bitches, 01 Nov 2017They aren't making their smartphones the best because it would hurt their other departments in... moreno phone camera, i repeat no phone camera can touch cybershot rx 100 in versatility and picture quality. its just their cellphone division being lazy and thinking anything with their name sells
