For that amount of money, Apple could have gone with an all sapphire display for the X. Considering the fact, that this phone is special in comparison to other iPhone generations.

Some older flagships were made with plastic backs.

AnonD-713039, 04 Nov 2017You know the marketing team doesn't have a decision or say in the engineering and design right?Headphone socket on iP7 was removed for two reasons:
                            1. For apple to have full control over what user connects to their devices - as Lightning port is proprietary and apple can charge licencing costs from 3rd party manufacturers. Audio socket doesn't share these traits and lets user connect any device even those not approved by apple. That's why they had to get rid of it.
                            2. Together with Intel campaign brainwash public into believing that wireless is "better" AND to have wallet ready consumers buy their fresh disposable AirPods.

So no, it was purely marketing decision to get more $$$ out of 3rd party manufacturers and screw loyal fanbase for the 1137th time.

wqcr, 04 Nov 2017There's always a choice of plastic, which unlike glass won't shatter when dropped. If $1000 phones were made of plastic, everyone would be like "OMG! $1000 and it's made of plastic! Shame on you!"
Probably wouldn't feel or look very "premium", either

Aluminium back makes much more sense as the heat get spread up evenly, and considering the back is usually covered with either bumper or case, there's no wow factor with glass at all.
