S7 Edge is way more fragile than S7.
It is the edge screen.

No jack and still small battery.
Z3 is 7.3mm like i7+. Z3 is shorter and it has 3100mAh inside.
Also higher IP and the jack.
How is it possible?
OEMs can make more money this way.
You will pay much more to fix the usb than p2.
Every year the CPUs have better litography. With that they will use smaller batteries than before.

The removal has nothing to do with greed though. Other than Apple with their Lightning connector licensing fees, Android and PC manufacturers have nothing monetary to gain from the open, universal standard USB-C. Literally anyone can manufacture devices for this standard. It just happens to be a far more useful port which is easier to implement in all devices compared to the 3.5 mm port.

Waterproofing adds a lot of bulk to the phone, not least of all to the 3.5 mm port. The 3.5 mm port also takes up quite a bit of space that could be better utilised for other things, such as battery. Removing the 3.5 mm port frees up this space, removes a limiting factor to the internal layout and makes it possible to make the devices sleeker than they would otherwise have been. Design-wise, thinner curved edges, for example, would suffer from having the bigger round port there.
General consumers don't agree with you that we don't need sleeker devices, as phones that feel or appear thick are disregarded in the store shelf. I do however agree that a main limiting factor are cameras, as optics would start to suffer if we shrunk them down further. I'd assume cameras and battery sizes are two of the main reasons why we've been seeing phones getting thicker recently. Consumers are finally starting to pay attention to camera performance more.
Headphone jacks only seem to be obsolete on phones. Even the thinnest laptops today still rock the jack. So do desktops and all music hardware does. It is far from obsolete. The jack is dying simply because companies see another way they can make money off of us as consumers.

Not to mention camera quality would suffer greatly among many other things. And the fact that too slim phone is totally uncomfortable. So you compromise something in the name of...another compromise.
Whether you like it or not 3.5mm jack is here to stay
For at least 10 years or more.

The S8 and Note 8 are actually rather thick (especially the Note 8) compared to the competition. The chunkiness of the 3.5 mm port doesn't help there.
Secondly, imagine how much sleeker a device could get when you didn't have that block limiting edge designs, device thickness and internal layouts.

The point is the 3.5mm jack has nothing to do with it. The phone can be sturdy or fragile with or without it. Same with battery size and bezels. AND water resistance.

Why Sony and Samsung can keep the jack while providing IP68 and Apple, Google and Htc had it removed to apply lower IP67?

Z3+ has higher IP rating, bigger battery, bigger camera, thinner body, headphone jack. A old big cpu that uses 24 or 20nm process which makes it big compared to newer cpu.
