Nokia won't fold, that's for sure. But they need to retire their symbian OS for something newer. My first phone was a Nokia and it was AWESOME. Phones back then were only about the calls, nothing else. Pulling out of Japan might be a good idea, since the residence in Japan mostly use text/video calls, Nokia won't stand a chance against Droid and iOS. But we may see Nokia with a few comeback phones soon.. wait and see! :)
When it comes to mobile phones, I'd say that Japan is pretty much self-sufficient and leading the world when it comes to tech, usage and features. It'd be a struggle for any foreign company to compete in that market, much less Nokia with their outdated flagships.
FWIW, Nokia still makes the best feature phones. But I can't imagine that's good enough for the Japanese to switch from their home-grown brands.
but anyway still hoping nokia will produce great phones.. although they pull out in some district of japan its not a big lost for them coz japan is also producing great phones.. nokia should target philippines and other asian countries hahahahahah

I am japanese and yea a proud Nokia and Symbian lover :) Not telling why I love so mcuh Nokia here tho, I just want to make it clear that it s not only Nokia but also any other major manufacturers that have been biting the dust in the japanese phone market. Galaxy S is doing great so far tho. it s just way too difficult and not really profitable to localize their phones(hardware wise)to such a limited and unique market, such as language, One-seg TV, Suica(IC card thingy), Decoration mail and so on. and I personally think the japanse market potential is shrinking so not worth it. so think Nokia made a right decision. it s sad tho.
raz06, 03 Jul 2011 I see a lot of comments about Nokia and Android being sold as an individual device ...
... moreMy experience with Nokia hardware is the N97. I am impressed with the screen readability in daylight conditions, the feel of the physical keyboard and the slide and tilt mechanism. The processor and RAM were its downfall as well as the buggy software.
I've also used the 6126 feature phone. It was the best phone I have ever used. It has a very good, spring action, clam shell mechanism and the buttons have a very nice feel to them. The screen was also very good.
The "smart" aspect of the smartphones is what Nokia failed to deliver. Better processor, RAM and OS/software is a problem if you want to do anything other than make a phone call.

The 5800 with moderate use barely lasted me 12 hours, where as I get at least a days worth of heavy usage from my Xperia's.
JunePhilippines, 03 Jul 2011Why Nokia don't run Android - "He (Stephen Elop) tried to negotiate a deal with Google... moreActually Android offered it self for Nokia. But they refused because they felt like Nokia would just be a part of masses and not an individual brand anymore. So they refused to adopt Android and wanted WP7 instead. By they way Windows and Nokia have an agreement that Nokia can modify WP7 in any ways they want. So they can modify it to have longer batterylife and other nice improvements over the normal WP7 by Microsoft.
I see a lot of comments about Nokia and Android being sold as an individual device ...
Please ...someone tell me ,why do many of you think Nokia has great hardware ?? You really think that Android 2.3.4 will ever run smooth on a crap-ware device from Nokia that has only 680MHz CPU and 256Ram (max) ,poor plastics and metal ...not to mention poor workmanship.
I know you like Nokia ,i used to like Nokia ,but GET OVER IT already ! Nokia's dead !(or still trying to die) get yourself a HTC or Samsung ,they got dual-core CPU's ,1GB Ram and more...
