Japan is very nationalistic market. You can't set up any legal protectionism - like high import duties. It's not allowed in WTO. So only Russia can. But Japan doesn't need it. They have cultural protectionism. And they have very good own producers to well maintain cultural protectionism - Sharp, Fujitsu, Panasonic. Those producers do not export their devices. They produce them only for domestic market and only on domestic assembling plants. So it's very difficult for foreign producer to compete with local producers.

Anonymous, 02 Jul 2011Instead of choosing WP7 Nokia could have decided to focus on MeeGo and make more than just 1 M... moreNokia needs money....Microsoft got it, they use it, Nokia release WP7 phones, partnership completes...if is succed or not no matter Nokia has resources (money)

        Simple as that

Meego don't have money, Meego is an experiment for Nokia, Nokia don't get that much investment for profits....= Nokias more poor :(

lol @ comments that apple does poorly in japan. iOS has 40% of the smartphone market in Japan -- better than in the US. (Android has 47%)

Having One ultimate OS would be TERRIBLE for the consumer. No competition means that the company with the sucvessful OS can force the users to do what they want. Either that or they just don't use their device. Competition is necessary and is good for not only consumers but for innovation and creativity.

[deleted post]Instead of choosing WP7 Nokia could have decided to focus on MeeGo and make more than just 1 MeeGo-phone each year! MeeGo on N9 show that it still is far better than WP7.
Instead of wanting Google to replace Google Maps they could have done as HTC and just add Nokia Maps while keeping Google Maps so that Nokia-buyers get both!
Harmattan is a good looking user interface that easily could have been added ontop of Android, just like HTC Sence.
Developers att MeeGo and Android, and even the also Linux-based Symbian, should join and together make the ultimate Operating Sytem that could beat Apple iOS, and eventually even beat Microsoft Windows. Android plus MeeGo plus Symbian into one Linux OS could be thr final victory for Linux, and be the universal operatingsystem for all devices and computers and..., making it really easy for appdevelopers and gamedevelopers...

True, Nokia is user-friendly. The standard of user-friendliness that all other phones come to copy... in the 90's. "Was".
But the last time i looked at the calendar, it says "2011". And most every other phones has already flew passed Nokia in user-friendliness. For this new millenium, Nokia has become the epitome of "user-UNfriendliness". Actually, rather extreme unfriendliness. I can't believe Nokia sat on its laurels in the 90's and never moved an inch forward all these years. But there it is. What a pity.
