Don't look at year of manufacture, look at designer/manufacturer. If you see Apple it's good, if you see Qualcomm it's medicore, if you see Mediatek it's awful.
Ipad 2017 is *still* the best spec'd tablet in the world ( after the ipad pro line of course)

It's a myth that tablet sales don't go well. Tablet *releases* were the one to be sh*t, once a good tablet is released it always sells. It's a very proftiable market (more units than laptops). If google had not given up on it (so that to sell more chromebooks) notebooks would easily be on their way out.
For example I use my ipad for almost everything (office, browsing, notepad, etc). Unless you're coding or touching pictures professionally you don't need a laptop anymore. The recent resurgence of tablets sales show just that. Google bet on the wrong horse (chromebooks are really bad prodcuts compared to what a pixel 2in1 good be)...

dont relate prices to devices of another category
either buy a samsung tab a 8.0 or ipad 2017 and be done with it

Samsung and Qualcom stagnate the mobile phone industry even though they aren't on top, I'm going to take a bet Apple would do the same with 0 competition.
