The 625 was introduced early last year, but you won't be getting anything better than 8xA53 cores (clocked at very decent 2GHz) in an entry level device anyway. It ticks all the other boxes that you'd expect too (all the modern features sans NFC), so what's the problem? Even battery life is generally good, thanks to the 14nm manufacturing process. BTW, Xiaomi's RN4X is available both with the SD625 and the Helio X20, which is way more powerful and, as far as I'm following, people are much more drawn to the weaker SoC because it's Qualcomm ("battery life is better", "there are more custom ROMs", "blah, blah, blah..."). So, the market wants Qualcomm => SD625 is the best you'll get in an entry level smartphone.

this is so sad xiaomi using an old chipset with two years old for a device carrying PRO name in 2018
this happen & using SD660 a midrange chipset for MI SERIES with high expensive price, makes me to think to other chinese brand with low price
now other chinese brand with low price make devices with new chipset of SNAPDRAGON like SD660 & good specifications
just like two or three years ago of xiaomi
Did someone just discovered a lost huge warehouse full of 625 chips? Can't we just see 635 chips by now? C'mon people....
and a few months after rn5/rn5 pro released there will be mi6x/mi a2 whatsoever.

Also the 636 was launched too late for this and 660 will make this phone much more expensive.
Snapdragon 450 is very good choice for Redmi 5! This phone will probably becoming one of most popular phone of 2018.
little sad we're not getting atleast the 636, if not the 660 in the plus.
But it's a perfectly usable chip in a budget device.
They're probably saving the big guys for the probable Note 5
Because the updates just keep rolling with gionee. Not to mention the ROM's you can get for Xiaomi devices
AnonD-699935, 06 Dec 2017redmi 5x or something like that will come with sd450 xiaomi did not use sd660 in new devices ... moreSD 630 is still likely (it's just a bumped 625 + some new features), but 636 and/or 660 may be not. With the recent global ROM release of Mi Note 3, it is plotted to be sold worldwide or at least outside China so it's gonna have a quite long lifetime.
It's not fair .Xiaomi is releasing back to back phone with the same 625 .They are afraid of battery life .But at least they should choose a new one .But one thing that I think Xiaomi is great in build quality .This time I'll buy Redmi 5 plus .I hope this time camera will be good .
