China only produced flimsy clones that barely worked up until a few years ago. If we pretend China's economy haven't boomed massively your argument would have been relevant.
AnonD-456829, 07 Dec 2017No wonder Xiaomi is shining. They make top quality phonesWith spyware added :P
Marco, 07 Dec 2017It's pure Chinese protectionism of their own Android smartphone manufacturers. Absolutley agree, most of their phones is trash, also could be that their economy is so messed up that they can't afford anything else...

Samsung is trash. They shouldn't be the leader in any country... but sheep keep buying their phones even though there are way better products on the market

ipolit, 07 Dec 2017It is unclear if the low cost devices are profitable or just used to increase the market share... moreI think you're wrong. Sammy makes profit form all the hardware (broken displays mainly) they repair.
A display is almost 50% of a phone's price. Almost ALL Samsung users I've seen have or had a broken display. Ka-Ching!
Also sammy is a MAJOR flooder of bs low and mid-range devices that i would personally never touch, not to mention buy.
BUT, I'd still choose ONLY a Sony or Sammy to buy.

It is unclear if the low cost devices are profitable or just used to increase the market share. It is known that Apple doesn't sell as much as Samsung and Huawei, but they make much more money. On the other hand Samsung makes most of their profits with the expensive devices.
Huawei, Oppo and Vivo don't have cheap devices. They have budget phones, but the least expensive are double price of the Redmis with equivalent specs. So they could be profitable.
Now Xioami will be listed on the stocks with capitalisation of 50 billion USD. They have nothing - their mobile devices, home electronics, electric bycicles are made by third parties. And this evaluation is based on their market share, but it is very likely they've earned 0.5 percent ot even they have loss.
And this rating is just showing the market share, not the proffits of the companies.

Countrary to your claim that Samsung decided to focus on being a parts supplier a few years ago, they heavily focused on selling their phones which people in China readily gobbled up at the time.
However, a combination of local competition that could design and make phones just as or better than Samsung phones and missteps by Samsung such as blaming users in China of deliberately causing their Note 7 to explode even after acknowledging it was a battery issue caused their brand to slide dramatically to these levels.
Anonymous, 06 Dec 2017What happened with Meizu? I tough they were doing great in their homeland.Meizu is making only phablets 5.5''+ and they are quite expensive. So they went the same way as HTC - mismanagement.
I think Samsung should introduce a new brand with low prices like Xiaomi. Otherwise they can't compete against this Chinese players.
Anonymous, 06 Dec 2017What happened with Meizu? I tough they were doing great in their homeland.I'm not sure if I'm understanding your comment correctly...
But the article did mention Meizu in the 3rd paragrah:
=============================================
Kantar analysist Dominic Sunnebo also says that “Chinese brands like Meizu, LeTV, Coolpad, ZTE, and Lenovo were once on the same trajectory as like of Xiaomi, but any momentum they once had has abruptly stopped, with many struggling to get past a 1% share.”
=============================================
If you mean what would be the reason why they stopped conquering the market or what happened to that endeavour, we really wouldn't know.
Personally, I think it has something to do with their flagships using poor specs lately and not being able to release them as fast as other competitors.
i am samsung heavy user from y to note, I got lenovo as gift, i found hardware quality was great, battery life so much better than samsung, used for more than 3 years still flat (on par motorola, sony), software is stable but update worse. over all better than other chinese brand
No wonder Xiaomi is shining. They make top quality phones
Samsung is nowhere to be seen... LOL LOL
The main reason Samsung is "nowhere to be seen" in China is because they decided a few years ago to be component supplier to Chinese brands instead of trying to get Chinese to use Korean devices. Samsung has the biggest profits in mobile so they're obviously doing something right in the fastest growing market in the world.
I think they learned the lesson from Japan where Japanese buyers were equally "home biased" when buying Asian brands.
What happened with Meizu? I tough they were doing great in their homeland.

With lots of ideas to begin with, I don't understand the need to copy. I mean, you're not building a restaurant and serve all the same exact food as another popular restaurant, heck even the same exact building plan (arrangement and placement of chairs, the way to serve food, etc.).
Business is not "Exactly The Same"
It must be "Similar But Not Exactly Identical."
I don't understand people who saying copycats all the time. Is there some law or rules that you can't make phone similar to other manufactures? Yes, you can't copy design or use technology without agreement. But if you illegally copy then your phone will be prohibited by law. If you pay for all patents - do whatever you want! Copycat or not, but if it's legal then why to blame manufacturer? It's business!
Very interesting stats.
