Anonymous, 25 Dec 2017Xperia XA Ultra with OIS and soft flash banned by Gsmarena? XA ultra gives K.O. to all from this top!
Anonymous, 24 Dec 2017TBH, disappointed that the Nokia 8 is not here. Although it's rear cameras can be improved wit... moreCompletely Agree with you. There is no way any of the phones on the list have better Performing Selfie Results. Even comparing to the Images posted in gsmarena reviews it's clearly visible the aren't on the same level. The One Plus 5/5T is simply horrible. even the top notch Pixel 2 is using very strong software unsharp mask enhancement that makes details such as eye lashes and brows look as if they were drawn. Galaxy S8 images become mosaic like at ISO500 and in flat lit situation. really not impressive, imagining what the S7 and S6 had to offer. and the S8 is the first AF selfie from Samsung. The Vivo 7 image quality is of the kind seen on phones from 3-4 years ago. the high mp count doesn't make the tiny pixels less noisy... Oppo R11 is of similar quality to the 3 year old HTC Desire Eye, which had dual front flash and in general a better phone, which sadly was the last decent Selfie offer from HTC. which brings us to the U11+ and U11... as the U11 and the Surprising Nokia 8 have very similar specifications. the Selfie capability difference was a deal breaker for me. and i waited long for a heir to my Desire Eye. if anything i am a HTC fan. and the Neglecting or lack of investment in it's Selfie oriented customers, just made me buy the Nokia 8.
A. Nokia 8 has far superior selfie Camera than all the contenders listed!
13mp Phase Detection AF with Zeiss lens. it is also clearly visible in your review shots that it is far superior to most of the models listed. you also should practice using the PDAF feature. my Selfies are far more detailed and focused than the ones you took. add to that 4K selfie video with superior sound quality. it should be ranked first on your list in my opinion.
B. Sony XA1 Ultra is a phone designed and targeted at the Selfie Niche. again it is designed to take Superior Selfies with ease with Sony Sensor and in House technology and of course AF, with quality flash. and decent sensor. true the phone itself is not top tier. and it's an update of two earlier models XA1 and earlier C6 both were competitors of the first real Selfie king the Three year old HTC Desire Eye (which is still of higher Selfie and Rear camera quality than at least half of your current list).
C. If you really aim to the Selfie focused readers, you need to have in mind, that AF front cam with equal quality sensor (not resolution as we see how bad the Vivo sensor is) will deliver always wider focusing range and will allow view angle and perspective control by moderate usage of the digital zoom, which promises less distorted portraits and also focused images outside of the free focus hyperfocal sweet spot. Ranking formula should always prefer AF: Front Cameras > Free Focus Front cameras.
Final words: If Top Manufacturers may feel offended by the absence of their Flagship phones from top selfie list it is mainly due to the attempt to cut costs and include low grade optics and cheapest free focus options and yet market it's "Selfie" premium quality which is simply not. Readers should not be fooled, by Reviews that clearly use words such as good and excellent. while the test images show clearly that it's not so. (HTC U11 and U11+ Selfie and i am fan of HTC. are simply not in the same League as Nokia 8 Selfie module. sorry) Please Re-Asses your List and include the Best Selfie Shooters of 2017 in it instead of two non AF selfie front shooters on your list, which don't deserve the false Selfie marketing hype they deserve.
