Lets not confuse IPR with SW backdoors. They are not the same. The tier one chinese manufacturers are pretty much aware of IPR issues and managing appropriately.

i personally like buying year-old flagships, however for someone in the market for a midrange phone, xiaomi caries an enormous amount of value, and if people aren't freaked out by the name, there is a potential to do a lot of good business. and I do think xiaomi has a better logo/name as far as American market perception is concerned (but that's just a personal opinion).
