Now if we can just get a really, really good hardware manufacture and I'm not talking Sa... moreNokia do not make any good hardware, they just make good phone-shells but the hardware inside their phones is really outdated, and it is Carl Zeiss, not Nokia, lens that make N8 camera good!

I don't belive it's just for patents. You can buy just those from Motorola, or agree on free patent sharing between all Android manufacturers. Less money same result.
I belive they need a native manufacturer for expirements on Android and Chrome OS. And of course for Nexus devices be it smartphones or tablets and smartbooks.

thats a smart move by google knowing that some other major smart phone producers might adopt mocrosoft's windows phone 7 mango for their new phones, they are now trying to protect their feature-rich android OS. This move by google wil also bring more challenges in the smartphone war.
