We're still in the infancy of the era of "smart speakers" and I for one am not going to adopt early. I have friends with variants of the Google Home and while its neat what it can do, the novelty of its actual "functions" if you will, wear off rather quickly. I think we're still at least a decade away from full integration where more homes have "smart" electronics to pair with a smart device controller. Think of it like early HDTV's, while available to the public as early as the late 90's, it was well over a decade before they became the industry standard.

I mean a decent sized screen and front facing speakers ... count me in.

Just look at this hideous hideous thing. It looks like an old micro system all over again, but now with a screen ! I mean, we came all the way from 1990 to today and it seems like we are going backwards.
I mean, ok, great, it's a smart speaker, I get it. But I can already imagine that the next iteration will sport a larger screen and this game goes on till the day the smart speaker actually becomes a tablet, with a huge screen and super smart AI, which will also be present in the most modern tablet by then. Just make a smart mini TV set already and call it whatever you like.
