Of course it has, you can't remove bottom bezel If you don't have notch. It would make very bad design and weird when you don't have centered screen. And one side can't be longer. That's why for example S9 have those big bezels down and top, even If they could have make one smaller they had to keep the same size so the screen is centered.
People want more screen in smaller phone and that's what notch can give you, if it's made right way like Apple did. It's stunning to see that X screen when it goes almost all the way up and down.

Galaxy has a res of 2960x1440, so a 16:9 video would be displayed on a portion of a screen of size 2560x1440, which is normal type of scaling for 16:9 videos. You lose 400 pixels horizontally as vertical black bars, which is the reduction of horizontal screen width of 87%. But iPhone has a weird resolution of 2436x1125. Apparently 1125 doesn't scale properly with 16:9 videos, so such a video would play in 1920x1080 screen size. Iphone ends up losing 516 pixels horizontally (and 45 pixels vertically), which is the reduction of horizontal screen width of 79%. And it adds two small horizontal bars at the top and bottom of the screen. I think there are some workarounds to play 16:9 videos in 2000:1125 screen size, so the video scales in the y-axis from the very top to bottom without black bars, but like I said, the scaling itself is unnatural. I think the video quality is much worse in that case because of the scaling. Plus, you still lose horizontal screen width on the order of 82%.

Even Galaxy S8 has a better screen to body ratio. Apple introduced it just because they wanted make something different and did not think about usability. They probably just thought " No matter what we do people will just buy iPhones because it has an Apple logo on it." So it doesn't really matter to them if they screw up the design or not.

Android companies should not put notch on their designs. It is ugly and non-functional. Please stick to full screen and keep some top bezel if needed, but no notch.

Removing the notch by scaling video down to make vertical black bars als... moreWhen you have certain size screen, you will always have some problems with black bars, because there's so many different aspect ratio materials. Just like you buy tv and you watch different materials, some show bezel some not.

Removing the notch by scaling video down to make vertical black bars also introduces small horizontal bars at the top and bottom. Must be because iPhone cannot scale the video properly because of its weird native res. So, 16:9 video doesn't quite fit to neatly remove the notch in the x-axis, but also, it doesn't quite fit in the y-axis. It's a gigantic screw up by Apple.

Notch is problem in these stubborn Android people heads, they don't even know what they are talking about because they haven't used one.
Do you seriously think that all these companies would make phone with notch If it's really a real problem. Of course not, they know what we X user knows, it takes few days and you forget that notch exist. It's like curved computer or tv screen. Few days it looks weird and after week etc. It just look like normal screen. You don't notice the curve effect anymore because it's also new normal for you now.

I guess that this must be due to incorrect scaling because of the poorly designed native resolution of iPhone X. The end result is that 16:9 video doesn't quite fit vertically, and neither does it fit horizontally. It's an ugly situation.

This clearly shows that you haven't used one, movies won't reach to notch, that's why they have that weird aspect ratio with X.

1. People who bought phone... more1. I don't own the phone.
2. I borrow the phone from my friend and used it for a while.
3. I don't think the notch is annoying. The opposite, I like it. the design is unique and distinguishable compared to other "bezeless" phone.
You should stop over-generalizing your opinion and pretending to know everything.

I quite like the iphone X. The notch gives the phone a unique identity and can be easily distinguished from far while samsung and other bezeless phones are too similar to each other.
I used my friend samsung s7 edge and s8, the glare produced by the curved screen are visually much worse than iphone x notch. Let alone the accidental touch.
I prefer flat screen and notch on iphone to samsung curved screen.

I like the way Apple work. Whenever they fail to make things right, they set those wrongs as trend. Thanks to their blind follower with no personality and self-respect.

The main idea of a notch is to ADD screen functionality to otherwise wasted area that normally is the bezel.
With this in mind, the notch should not occupy from the normal screen area, as it does in iPhone, for example.
The 19:9 ratio of the incoming OP Six and OPPO makes a lot of sense: in theory they cut the bezel and replaced it with screen and still have a full functioning 18:9 screen.
Also, the notch can be easily hided with a wallpaper that it has a black strip up, leaving the notification to be seen on a black background mimicking the bezel .
Of course, the discussion is more complex, based on a lot of variables, like the software handling that area, its size, phone size etc. I was just presenting the general principles that should be taken into consideration.
I'm not a blind hater of the notch, neither advocating it , simply trying to find the best solution regarding this trend.

+I don't mind some bezels on the sides of the screen but I think I mind any bezels inside the screen.
Look at screen to body ratio of Samsung Galaxy S9+ (84.2%) which is slightly bigger than iphone X's ratio (84.2%) but a little bit smaller than Essential PH-1's ratio (84.9%). The difference in these 3 phones is negligible, I think they should consider that having no bezels is better in quality especially for videos,websites and imitating a PC (such as with Samsung's DeX dock)

Turn your iPhone X horizontally to watch movies an your eyes will always be at left side looking at that "thing" blocking your screen. You say software trick can hide it? So that's mean I am loosing my screen portion just hide that "thing"? No thank you, keep your nonsense away!

I actually don't see a character, I just see the notch in iPhone X, and in other copy-cats, I see imitation!
