So I will no longer be able to use some of my bought older apps and games, that is not ok! I want my money back!
OEM should keep their devices up to date if their older device are capable to, such 4GB RAM 64GB ROM will able to receive update for at least 6 updates version
Anonymous, 19 Mar 2018I knew that this will happen sometime in the future. Now this time has come. Digital planned o... moredropping support for a 5 year old operating system is NOT planned obsolescence. Do you still use Windows XP? Do you think Microsoft should still support it? Besides, with Android Go, Google is trying to make it possible for everyone to have a phone at pretty much any price range that has the latest os version. They're trying to increase the efficiency of their own code AND cater to the users who don't feel the need to upgrade every couple of years. It's a win/win in general. Right now is basically a ripping of a band-aid.
MarcioR, 19 Mar 2018Finally, too bad the requirements isn't Nougat already. Apps should be updated. I'm on Oreo 8.... moreThis 100%! No one's saying that people with old phones *need* to buy new ones. I understand not everyone has the money to buy a new phone every so often. But that's exactly what custom roms like LOS are for!
Oviously if a phone still is using those old os's there no way they're upgrading to "P" in th first place so why is everyone so worried? Plus most of the phones that old is forced to upgrade by certain carriers. Stop the complaining and upgrade your fossil phone.
Pryceed, 19 Mar 2018Does anyone still use a device with an older android than 4.2?Look at these comments here. People apparently do. That's why they make a big deal out of it. It's about time some devs are forced to update their apps.
Some of the OEM's are STILL selling handsets with Android Lollipop (with skin) for $100 & they never bother to update the OS. Before taking this decision, GOOGLE must ensure that ALL the old handsets are updated to LATEST os or they are not sold anymore with OLDER os.
lacika, 19 Mar 2018you right! and we are the costumers must stop this!!You can stop this by not buying new phones.

How about old means older OS than nougat? Since nougat start using vulkan API, so older apps not using vulkan will not able to run
Pryceed, 19 Mar 2018Does anyone still use a device with an older android than 4.2?Yes and it works fine.. so what is ur problem man...!
Android Partial Edition, as in partially run all the apps ever made for Android.
Finally, too bad the requirements isn't Nougat already. Apps should be updated. I'm on Oreo 8.1 and there are apps i use which are buggy as hell.
At least Lollipop would be a good requirement.
Even my old 2013 nexus is on official marschmallow, and it's a 4 year old device.
If people don't have the money to buy new smartphones, there's always the possibility to run a custom ROM.
Then there are the people who never owned a flagship device, well, there's Android ONE for them

Good job! This issue of fragmentation by OEMs and developers should be addressed ASAP
I think this is a great thing. People with old phones (I mean, who the hell keeps a phone so outdated it still runs 4.2?) hold back the development of hardware and optimization of modern versions. Old code ruins optimization. Just buy a cheap new phone with a recent android version and it will still probably be better than your current 4.2 phone.
