Seeing Vivo's apex design, it makes me wonder why they are still making notches on their phones, when they already have the all- screen Apex, which honestly looks way better.

you have to fit the components inside the phone. There is a simply reason why most phones are the same. I agree that the notch is not needed on most of these phones though.

For example, Apple copying front body Meizu MX4 on their iPhone 6-8.
The first dual camera on left upper back body is Huawei Honor 6+ not the iPhone 7 Plus.
Apple is not original.

I believe this "Chinese copy" phenomenon has actually a lot to do with the Chinese mentality. People who have never been to China or have never seen how the Chinese education system works but find it hard to understand, but "out of the box thinking" is not what they strive for in educational institutes there. When you are asked to write an essay, what you have to do is copy almost exactly some reference text to get a high score, but if you use your imagination to come up with a text that while satisfies the teacher's criteria, goes into completely different direction than expected or presents a completely new view on the subject, you are guaranteed to get the lowest mark possible. Even in ancient China artists were mostly copying works of renowned masters and the one who has copied it down to individual brush strokes was considered to have done the best job.

It's the thing with the Chinese market. Vivo is targeting those who want to buy an iPhone but can't afford it. Please remember that iPhones on the mainland China go for at least 20% higher price than in neighboring Japan, Korea or Hong Kong. But not only that, the Chinese just don't care about companies blatantly copying stuff like the westerners do so while a customer from say the US might be repulsed to see Vivo/Oppo/Xiaomi etc copying camera setup, the notch, wallpapers or even going as far as copying the apple's UI, the Chinese just happy about it since they get the feel of the desired product for a fraction of price.

Notch is somehow OK, if display cover whole front like in iPhone, but even more than that I prefer small symetric bezel top/bottom (like S9, but not edge display). Here (vivo V9) it is simply joke to mimic iPhone.
