Why did it peak in 2013/2014 and is now totally dead?
Dunno maybe because OEM's are selling tabs in 200 mark with hardware identical to 2013 era in 2018.

So really is anyone surprised the tablet market is dying. Even Samsung with its Tab S doesn't give it flagship internals for that year yet sells it with a flagship price, instead it adds last year's or 2 year old hardware.
For example Tab S3 should have released with a S835 with such a huge price tag and not a S820, heck even a S821 would be a better choice but not with such a huge price.

The last true Samsung flagship tablet was the Note 10 2014, a 2013 tablet. Ever since then all they released was way underpowered but overpriced.

I've still got my trusty ancient 2012 Galaxy Tab 2 10 that I got for 50€ back then and compared to the crappy Lenovo tablet my gf just bought for 150€ they are using almost identical hardware yet 6 years apart. Guess which performs better.

I loved a tablet because I'm an e-book reader. Give me a 10" inch tablet and the Amazon kindle app and I'm happy. The problem with tablets is that they weren't given the same modernization of phones, which are always getting something new. Even nowadays, tablets are still being sold with old hardware and are usually left with the same OS version forever. I had a tab 2, upgraded to 4 that was later upgraded to Tab A. All because Samsung didn't bother to update these things. I am aware that Tab A won't be updated as well.

Very interesting article. I remember the hype back in 2012 for a tablet, even before that.

iPad was so luxurious, futuristic, and expensive. Everybody wanted one.

Now the hype is gone. The hype is with the "NOTCH" now.

What are you saying is, what apple did, when switched from PowerPC to intel. But then developers still had to do rewrite apps for intel CPU. Apple just brought time with emulation.
As software base has grown up anc became complex , it would be more painful to apple to do transition. Unless they plan to abandon intel CPU's and intel completely (which I doubt would happen, since they use intel modem in IPhone and that means Apple is happy with intel), theres no good reason to do that.

it's always gonna be like rear tire try to catch up front tire. Now days tablet with portable keyboard maybe can do more than a laptop 10 year ago or even a PC 20 years ago, but the software or apps demands more and more specs power processing, that's why the most demanding software or apps can only run on great PC. Ppl said there are gaming laptop that can accomodate multi GPU, yes, but for how many? PC can accomodate many GPU and CORES as long there's a motherboard for it, beside the size of that laptop must be big and pretty heavy, almost loose the meaning and function of laptop itself, so size always matter. Let's say Apple chips A11 Bionic can outmatch core 2 duo, but it cannot match intel latest core for sure, coz if it can then all Mac would just use A11 chips. what small can do, then bigger would be better in the equivalent of time in terms of specs power.

By the way my opinion to the idea tablet, it must be adopt next generation battery technology to slim down and become even lighter on weight and also must has longer battery endurance and also battery lifespan. 1080 and 4K shift technology and dual front firing stereo speakers.

Tablets are still great even today. But recently Lap tops more and more often offer to be transformed into a tablet or provide you with a touch screen. Some even can ditach their keyboard. There are lap tops out there with touchscreens with Snapdragon 835 that can be used as tablets as well.
Pure tablets were a major success for kids or younger generations.Samsung and Huawei even on entry level tablets made them amazing and good looking and on top prices they were equal to iPads and offered more than them. I am still looking forward for tablets to have 18:9 aspect ration screens, have flagship chipsets and be great again.
