Why add more screen real estate that you couldn't even use to the full? Besides, that status bar on the horns of the screen would eat more battery and burn-in fast in OLED displays compared to a screen without a notch.

Both sides of the notch should be black and have the usual info, clock battery wifi..., always visible, but turned of, completely black, by fullscreen apps/games!

People want bigger batteries, sharper screens, wireless charging and proper software support (OOS Oreo ROM based on Nougat firmware without Treble support is a fail) and OnePlus decides that people apparently want a notch which ultimately they decide to hide after backlash. I wish people would realize just how uninnovative this company is. Their only advantage was the price but that will be gone in max. 2 years. Good riddance.

This something that should already be there in all phones with notch.
Phones having a notch usually have a 19:9 screen rather than the usual 18:9 aspect ratio.
So make the notch background black and just display the status bar contents.
and the remaining 18:9 of the display can be fully used by the Apps/Games/Videos, just like Immersive mode where you hide the status bar, here you are just pushing the status bar up still having it visible with the display on either side of the notch. PERFECT !!
Think about it WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE
A) A FLAT BEZEL OF NO USE (status bar will take some part of the available sceen below)
B) A Status Bar (Leaving the whole screen below for the app).

And stupid too lose the time developing how to hide something that it's physically there. If you don't like it, better don't buy it, simple.

It's a choice of paying flagship money for the maximum screen area in a given frame, or paying less for a smaller screen with larger bezels. There are hundreds of phones with full bezels and smaller screens, any of you are free to choose one of those instead of a handful of notched models.

Anonymous, 04 Apr 2018Hide notch, at what cost? Screen burning. I'm done with OnePlus. If it's an OLED screen, those extra pixels around the notch will just be turned off and so there's no burn-in issue.
