Sam.Smythe, 17 Apr 2018I agree with most of users here giving opinions about the design. I won't call it ugly. Generi... moreThe main complaints with Sony is:
1. Poor screen to body ratio.
2. Lack of OIS on their cameras
3. Thickness.

1 and 3 could be remedied by better design and internal construction. All people want is a slim phone and light with good battery life. No one wants to carry a big fat brick.

Unfortunately, Sony is stubborn and sticking with their huge PCBs (with plenty of wasted space) and slapped on batteries, which is no wonder why their phones are thick and fat. Just look at teardown videos to see how massive their PCB is and how much wasted space is on those PCBs. Sony should learn from Apple, Samsung and Huawei and how to design smaller PCBs as well as designing their PCBs around the battery.

Sony is also stubborn about refusing to add OIS to their cameras. Sure, Sony makes great sensors for themselves and other companies but is making poor use of their sensors with mediocre software and poor hardware. OIS is still important for video especially when it comes to 4K.

Sure, their optimization is great, but the average person doesn't just use their phone because it's optimized, they use their phone for plenty of uses like photo taking and carry it around with them, hence they want slim and light phones.

Their stubbornness and refusal to adapt is what is causing them to lose sales.

I won't call it ugly. Generic-looking is rather appropriate term. But in modern days like this, the only design that will standout is a clamshell or a slider since there aren't many competitors came with that design previously. Designing a smartphone slab nowadays? Better get prepared to be bashed by people with bad and stinky mouth.
Sticking a keyboard? They'll said you copied BlackBerry and/or Samsung Note Keyboard Cover
Notch? They'll said you copied iPhone X / Essential
Edgeless top? They'll said you copied Xiaomi / Sharp
Curved screen? They'll said you copied Samsung
Stick to previous signature design with reduced bezels? They'll said Sony is dead with old design

Really, I wished the designers came up with another form factor. That way they'll make headlines, sales and shut people's mouths off at the same time. Clamshell? With specs like XZ2 Premium, I don't mind 25 mm thick clamshell phones. ;)

Sony, go back to the drawing board.....I would start by getting rid of the entire design team. Tech might be world class but I would be too embarrassed to use this phone in public.

This comment section makes me want to ROFL at how delusional the Sony herd are. Just proves they're just as delusional if not more delusional than the Apple herd. It's pretty obvious that this phone is a major flop for everyone but the most ardent members of the Herd. A 4K 5.8" screen but LCD = mediocre battery life no matter how much optimization is done. XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are also major thick and fat flops with mediocre battery sizes.

Thicc and phat but mediocre battery size while other manufacturers managed to cram 4,000mAh+ batteries in their phones while being thinner. The lack of a headphone jack is another major flop. Pretty obvious that Sony is stubborn at sticking with its poor PCB design and construction design, with just pasting a giant slab of PCB and then sticking the battery on top. Meanwhile, other manufacturers like Samsung and Huawei are working on making smaller and smaller Logic boards so they can keep the same thickness while having bigger batteries, and designing the PCB around the battery.

Pretty sure, the rabid indoctrinated Sony herd is gonna react negatively to this comment and post endless defenses to desperately defend their dying brand. The only reason Sony Mobile is still alive is because their losses is offset by the profits from PlayStation sales and other divisions.

You do realize how much bandwidth is consumed in transmission of 4k media? Besides app developers cater to widest audience available, if there's no demand for 4k on mobile, most won't bother with it. For Media providers like Netflix and YouTube this is not a major issue since they don't need to care about users bandwidth and only host the content to their servers, in most of which it's already there for their web apps and TV apps. Why would a game developer go through that hassle of rendering more pixels without any significant gains? In that case won't onus be upon manufacturer to encourage developers to develop apps?

No OIS for the cameras?!

And wasn't it supposed to have an OLED screen from LG display?

Pity it doesn't use front stereo speakers, and instead uses a weird & asymmetric setup.

Definitely looks like a japanese manga.

Tho, looking at that top competition, with seriously protruding double/tripple lenses, screen notches, ovoid edged screens, this is not "that" bad.
Ugly is a new trend among all...
Cant really pin out anything looking great to me...
All ugly, including new Sony

Interesting watch that they are unable to add a 4000 mAh battery in an 5.8" 16:9 but it's weight is 240g! And meanwhile they keep this strange design, Samsung has patented a full screen 100% ratio stylish design probably for their next flagships and a notched one probably for some mid range ones. Plus the foldable ones when arrive.

Sony gives you best, app developers not the best.

Similarly...Go ask your IPTV provider, why they only provide FHD programs, when you got a shiny new 4K HDR TV.
Maybe those TVs shouldnt be marketed as 4K HDR ha?
