I mean, many reviews have stated that photos are more naturally processed this time unlike the S8/Note 8. So "over-sharpening" to them may have a different definition to others. That's why it's so hard to just rely on one review like this as the approach could still be leaning towards being subjective - personal perception/taste/preference.

You don't know what to believe. There are reviews where they mentioned that the S9/S9+ are much better than the S8/Note8 for having a more natural/laid back processing. The part of review that I will believe is ONLY THE DROP TESTS.

Anonymous, 17 Apr 2018Ultra boring phone. Looks like a Samsung A8 lolYou must be kidding? I remember pulling out my S8 during the early days (before iPhone X was launched). There was this iPhone user sitting beside me who literally dropped her jaw. She said "is this even possible?! The edge-to-edge screen looks stunning!".

The A8 looks more like LG G6 than S8/S9. The curved infinity screen makes a difference.

S9 did a lot more than one would expect in a 6 month improvement cycle.

Cameras improved, slow motion video modes doubled in potential, an additional 720p@960fps was added with software tweaks to use it best, and the audio, and the display.

Yes, people do give it lesser credit, but apart from the Huawei P20 Pro, what else is a clearly better and more innovative all rounder than S9?

You see, some parameters are measurable objectively and quantitatively. These are the likes of battery endurance, performance benchmarks, display tests, audio, drop tests, etc. But one thing that is so hard and almost impossible is to measure is which camera is the best. It's one of the most subjective aspect of a smartphone, and opinion will always differ depending on the one who perceives it. Therefore as the source differs the 'best smartphone camera' will always be different. The general difference between a 'good' and 'bad' camera is not hard to tell, and there always be a general consensus about it. But when it comes to which one is "the best", perception will always be different.
This is why DxOMark, Consumer Reports and other tests will have their own winners on the topic of camera (the range of smartphones they test is a different topic - even among the ones they test in common). Each of their top three (to say the least) will circle around the testers' perception and personal tastes.
