Many of the stereo equpped phones had low ring volumes. I guess the total space for amplifier + speakers, were about the same in many single speaker equipped phones as it were in those with two speakers, thus meaning quite a lot of more power and higher volumes with the single speaker.
I would prefer a single speaker with better performance, capable of louder playback without terrible distortion, since I would not use the built in speaker/s for any serious listening. It can be useful for showing something to someone, for a bit of background music, or for the occasional dialogue heavy video, and for those scenarios, stereo would be way less important than the ability to overpower surrounding sounds.

It is a flagship feature like no 3.5mm jack. Only lower-end Android have mono speakers and 3.5mm jack

Many of the older Nokia Nseries phones had stereo, they sounded really cool for listening to music out loud

Anonymous, 07 May 2018Bounce it off a wooden surface or cardboard if you can't find wood. It's decent. I probably would have been really impressed years ago. But I also had an omnia hd and Sony devices.
Now with an alcatel idol 4s and s9 plus it definitely won't be my go to. But it's more than sufficient and improved with that patch

Couldn't care less about these tiny stereo speakers, they are always the worst choice sound-quality wise. I always use good headphones or connect the phone to my amplifier and speakers. Owned three phones with stereo speakers, after the 2nd one I couldn't care if my phones have mono or stereo speakers.

Stereo speaker is a gimmick when the speakers is all firing from the side or back of the phone.
The only great stereo speaker is from Sony XZ2 it has dual front stereo speaker and improved loudness and clarity.

I prefer stereo sound, but I've to admit that speakers on my Nexus 6P are really poor. They get a little better when you turn down volume, but in that case I'd just rather wear earphones. I wonder what Sony's speakers are like.

Make sure that the surface is wooden without lacquer or cardboard.
