It's just silly human psychology, they rather buy something closer to the top brands' model numbers (Samsung S9, iPhone 9/iPhone X), so rather they name it 8 with an anniversary and try to compete.
OnePlus skipped 4 because of bad luck -beliefs. Just catching up with the numbers.

I get it now. They can have the tech to make a 3D facial recognition, but they cant make enough phones with it (unlike apple), solution: a super limited anniversary edition.

That way you can brag about having it. =)
