NOKIA is still doing the same mistake that not releasing the mobile phones in the global market as soon as it is announced. Because of the delay some other competitor getting benefits and releasing their best config product in between the delay made by NOKIA.No one will wait for your product for years that you will release your product after all update.

Sub 400(can't really call budget) Nokia 7 plus
Design p20 lite if notch is up your alley, or honor 9 lite
Camera can't really think any flagship competitors here, but a mi note 3 should be fine
Under display fps x20 plus ud (might find for cheaper now that x21 is out)

I know it sounds like a waste of money, but once I get a job, I'll try out these budget models. I'm very curious to see how the budget tier has evolved since my first phone.

Yes, s9 has better camera and performs better, but I have my dslr for situations I need to take quality pics, I don't really expect beaches in NY, or go to pools for that matter. Besides battery is insane on note 5 pro and camera and performance is acceptable enough for regular usage. TLDR you really need to try one of low cost xiaomis(via amazon though there wont be warranty) or even nokia 7 plus if you can go to 400$ (contrary to merwyn, I actually like good product when I see it, be it nokia or oppo or huawei), The flagships are rarely worth the cost now, esp with their prices approaching 1000...

That's why Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei,Nokia, and others are so successful. Cheap phones with great value. I would consider buying them, but they aren't available in the USA and I like flagships. Still, I get what you mean. Nowadays flagships are so much and that's mostly because of brand name and other factors.
