The US has *not* switched off 2G. AT&T has. T-Mobile US has not.

Can't they exi... morepower usage, maintenance cost, upkeep cost and a dwindling market of phones that use those bands mean that it's not worth keeping them around. granted there are some places that aren't able to keep up but the locations that are doing away with the older outdated systems have a solid connection for modern phones to fallback on.

3 is garbage. I've never lived in the UK but I bought a prepaid 3 SIM when I was there on vacation, I didn't get reception anywhere, sometimes outdoors. Junk.

3g was always bad indoors where i live, dropped calls all the time. 4g slightly better but only certain phones do Volte. Wonder if 5g will be better for indoor signal and depending what Mhz its will be on.
I also found that my battery drained much quicker on 3, im guess that was to do with my phone forever searching for a dignal. Im now back on o2 and have none of these issues. But would look at 3 again if indoor coverage improved.

No big deal, in Brazil we do not sell 3G phones at Claro's operator since 2016.

Reducing the number of active ranges obviously frees up bandwidth for other things. I'm guessing they're freeing up space for 5G by closing the UMTS bands.

Let's hope they're going to make these 4G phones waterproof as in my area getting a decent Three signal indoors is like winning big on the lottery.

Why? I'm also wondering about the carriers who will kill both 2G and 3G... why? Can't they exist in the same time as 4G or even 5G? Meanwhile in my country, there are still areas with mostly 2G coverage and very weak 3G, let alone 4G.
