That's customised version of semi-open source race simulators like rFactor and Racer. The reason working with a developer is that they'd get a proper way into the wider VR ecosystem. Locking themselves in with one hardware brand is going to fail as much as their cars have the last decade. Codemasters already have released VR editions of their rallying game. They have the experience to do it right and they have the best F1 game (from an entertainment perspective) out there already.

Wouldn't it be better for McLaren to partner with someone like Codemasters? I mean, the VR game that will make me jump on the bandwagon is F1 2018 with VR.
