LG Superfan, 30 May 2018S5 has ip67 rating same as iPhone 7As a rating, yes.
But in practice, the Samsung S5 was severely prone to drowning much more than the iPhone 7. And the iPhone 7 is slightly behind the Samsung S7, S8, S9 when it comes to ingress protection. And the S9 is everso slightly behind the LG V30 which currently has the best ingress protection (or maybe that goes to the AT&T Galaxy S8 Active).

People are already compla... moreYeah, I totally get that, absolutely, each person will go for a phone that suits themselves, their lifestyle, budget and so on and the IP rating may not be as important to others.
I just felt that some people were just dismissing an IP rating as if it's worthless really, some kind of gimmick and of "no use" and that an IP ratings only function was to drive up the price of the phone.
The IP68 rating on the S8 Plus was important to me and it just gives me that added reassurance that I was looking for and rather than me just guessing how water resistant the phone is, I do have a good idea of it's limitations rather than just guessing, as it should conform to an internationally recognised standard.
In short it adds value for me. It means something.
E.g of what I consider guessing
"The OnePlus 6 looks to have better dust proofing, but only surface-level water resistance. So you can say its like an IP65 rating"
E.g of dismissing an IP rating as not useful
"IP rating only raises the price of the phone. Ip rated phones like Sony, s9 & iPhone x are not covered by warranty if water damage. So no use"
That's all :) Oh and by the way I'm not knocking the OP6 it was specifically about the IP rating or lack of.
If you tend to spend a lot of time out of home, water protection isn't an option, it's a requirement.
The only phone without water protection in the last 4 years died in a storm. No one to blame but myself, buying such a phone was a stupid decision.

People are already complaining that the price of OnePlus phones are rising every year and that they will start pricing like Apple or Samsung.
Its to not make them liable for if and when a phone they produce doesn't take a hammering and fails. Seals can fail in any device but one plus can't take such risks. Damages mean more to them than say Apple or Samsung.
Nick.B, 30 May 2018because warranty claims from stupid owners
simple as thatI agree. Its all about mitigating risk now for companies on the margin.
Giving it an IP rating will basically encourage people to take the micky and start swimming with their phones. Its ridiculous and quite frankly a pain in the backside that isn't intended when they give such ratings.

Disagree, it was one of the selling points for buying an S8 Plus for me, so I was happy to pay any extra cost for it. So it reassured me a bit more than if the phone came without a rating as this phone.
I'd rather buy a phone with an IP rating than a phone than does not as in the case with this phone.
In this so-called water resistance inspection conducted by Jerryrigeverything all he did was the equivelent of looking at a door to see if it LOOKED shut, BUT he didn't actually check that the door was actually LOCKED though ( it looked alright but he didn't test it with water)
P.S I agree with the warranty part though
they announced water resistance as a big announcement, i was expecting IP68 but it's not, it dissapointed me
I think that the 6T would be IP68 waterproof.
6 wasn't ready in time for the certification?
And I also think that 6T would have Qi wireless charging. To justify the glass back!
LG Superfan, 30 May 2018V20 does not have ip rating and ip67 is water proofing for 1meter ip58 is water resistentSorry, I meant LG V30 (the 2017/2018 version).
Yes, IP58 has lower dust and higher freshwater resistance. The OnePlus 6 looks to have better dust proofing, but only surface-level water resistance. So you can say its like an IP65 rating, its probably below the IP67 of the iPhone 7 and definitely not as good as the LG V30.
Seems like the sort of protection level the Galaxy S5 had, which was great for jets of water/rain but not that immune to cannonballing with the phone into a pool.
Carl, 30 May 2018Oh yes, tell that to your customers when they'll lose their phone due to a manufacturing defec... moreno company gives warranty on water damage even with IP rating. if s9+ is damaged by water then even if its a manufacturing defect you can't claim warranty.
IP rating only raises the price of the phone. Ip rated phones like Sony, s9 & iPhone x are not covered by warranty if water damage. So no use. Even with an ip68, u can't risk putting your phone in swimming pool since it won't be covered by warranty if water damaged.
At least the OnePlus 6 has the protection, but not the rating & hence also cheaper

the skipped on the certification because it is pretty expensive and it would have brought the price up - so they actually did it for the consumers :)

The problem is that they don't give you warranty, so if you use your phone in the shower or the pool and your unit has a manufacturing defect, you lose your phone or you'll problably pay more than a new one for repair it. Because they don't give you any warranty against the water. Against an accident ok, but better avoid its use in the water.
So nice this phone is water resistant even without claiming on its specs opage it have a water resistance.
In case of Samsung or Apple there is Claim of IP68.
In case of Oneplus there is nothing but still the phone can sustain some water damage.
Thats great.
Because there are always some clumsy guys which will call this flagship a midranger.
