The only ratio it makes sense is 16:9.
EVERY game.
EVERY movie.
EVERY media you would play at any TV or Monitor.
Everything runs at 16:9.
If you change the ratio, it will appear black bars when you reproduce content, or the video will appear stretched and horrible.
18:9 and higher are just a gimmick for common phone apps, like apps used for work, calendar, camera, tasklist, bank etc. If you want MEDIA content like games, movies or videos, it's a huge step backward.

Much more content is available in 16:9 than in 18:9. TVs have not switched to a wider aspect ratio, and I don't see it happening because of the horizontal space constraints in a typical living room. Therefore, it is unlikely that 18:9 will become a more popular format.

Meanwhile, to achieve an equivalent viewing area for 16:9 content, >= 18:9 phones become excessively tall, making them difficult to fit in pockets. Also, any wasted or unnecessary vertical space is just using up battery life for little benefit.

This is a classic move by manufacturers of commoditised products to convince consumers
to buy new phones. It is truly incredible to see how new 16:9 phones are so rarely released so shortly after the adventure of 18.9 phones, much too short a time to establish consumer acceptance.

The industry is ex growth, and just milking people at this point in a classic example of an uncoordinated cartel driven by mimicry, parallel price rises, and planned obsolescence through non-removable batteries, the lack of repairability of phones, and the appalling absence of security updates after a product has been released.

Anonymous, 03 Jun 2018QHD is useless.. 1) you find TVs with resolutions HD, Full and UHD. There is no QHD tv. ... morethere used to be many QHD and WQHD TVs, that is until UHD came in late 2016 and every QHD TVs lineup were changed to UHD TVs. while there is only a few content that was exported in QHD format (at most was 2015, but drop significantly in 2016), the extra pixel are still a benefits due to supersampling technology. to be honest, at that screen size (7inch and less), most can't differentiate between UHD, QHD, and FHD, but the difference between FHD and QHD were night and day in VR.

Anonymous, 03 Jun 2018There are a lot of noobs who resist change. The very people here that think 18:9 displays are... moreWhat the call WIRELESS CHARGING is gimmick..

1) there is a cable involved, cant be wireless. Unless the base has inner battery and cable is used just to charge the base.

2) it is slower than Qualcomm's QC 2.0. The QC 4.0 is available since SD835.

3) temperature of the device is higher compared to usb.

4) you are not able to do a lot while phone is charging.

5) it will decrease whole life of battery. Less cycles.

Anonymous, 03 Jun 2018There are a lot of noobs who resist change. The very people here that think 18:9 displays are... moreQHD is useless..

1) you find TVs with resolutions HD, Full and UHD. There is no QHD tv.

2) no content is recorded in QHD. What you watch QHD is made 4K but your screen cant play 4K.

3) Difference between UHD and QHD is more than QHD/FullHD

4) android apps dont run 1440p , unless the dev gives support. Sony gives 4K support for their 4K phones, but 3rd part apps still remain 1080p or less. 99% of apps run 1080p/720p on QHD phones.

5) Most phones use QHD because the oled pentile. Which is as sharp as a 1080p rgb screen. Blame on who sell the screens. LG and HTC are just wastimg time with QHD LCD.

There are a lot of noobs who resist change. The very people here that think 18:9 displays are a step backwards are probably the same group of people that thought 2k displays were useless and unnecessary at a time when 1080p screens were the norm and now those very same group of people are using phones with 2k screens now and are completely oblivious to how opposed to it they were.

Wireless charging is the other one; people who have never used it dont understand it and think it's a gimmick and those that do you use it don't know how they ever lived without it.

Its about bringing visually bigger screen while not getting bigger - top/bottom bezels become the screen. Everyone wants big screen. Also no ratio is definitive, as tech evolves.

Its funny that people who never used 18:9 or taller devices are saying they suck. I thought changing the aspect ratio was unnecessary, but after using a taller device I couldn't go back.

"...you get much more content..."

Oh please. We're talking of one (1) additional row of icons on the home-screen which is wasted due to badly designed launcher UI's.

You can also get an additional row of icons when using for example Nova launcher instead of Samsung's or huawei launcher. Don't need a elongated screen for that! UI designers should use their brains instead of just adding screen.

Then there's the fact that more pixels to lit-up in case of AMOled screens need more power. And pushing more pixels around require the GPU to do more work and again uses more power.

Everytime battery-power increases it's wasted on screen. Either higher resolution or longer non-standard screens. We STILL haven't got smartphones that can truly last a week.

Then there's the fact that "content" isn't designed with these non-standard aspect ratios in mind. Creating ugly black bars at the sides and thus defeating the purpose of having a bigger screen. How ridiculous is that?

But I get it. It's the manufacturers plan of planned obsolescence.

16:9 is by far superior, 18:9 and higher are utter gimmicks on a phone and content will not see wider adoption for these standards for a very simple reason: all TVs are 16:9, and 99% of monitors are 16:9 as well. Good luck changing that any time soon. Never mind how inferior they are for reading PDFs, comic books, etc.

I vote with my wallet, got an XA2 Ultra (which is beyond gorgeous display-wise), and maybe will switch to XZ2 Premium if I feel like it. As long as 16:9 is still an option I'll never switch.

Best is STILL 16:9. Having notch or taller screens you have a BIG problem. On Instagram, for example, I press on an Insta-story and the image is croped on sides to fill the whole screen. And guess what. I CAN'T read the text on the sides of the image. Idea is great, I LOVE these taller phones, but there is little content with tall aspect ratio, and forcing a 16:9 image or video looks awful. If an image is 4:3, is 4:3. You can't make it wider.

Those dumb notchphones are copycats. Loot at them.

But I prefer 16:9. Gives enough liberty to make phones original and allows true enjoyment of video content as they were meant to be. Zooming is dumb. To fill the sides you will have to crop the video. Also you can reach the whole screen more easily

AnonD-673279, 03 Jun 201816:9 is objectively superior. There isn't even a standard tall aspect ratio with 18:9, sams... moreI agree; Xiaomi made the first mi mix 17:9 but it felt the right ratio because of its precisely designed bezels, but it did cost 1000$ and it had a big flaw, had you dropped it would have broken to pieces
Samsung used to differentiate S models to note ones, S were for gaming and social media and Note series were made for professionals on the go(remember the first galaxy note ad?)
people could use it to read a pdf file or edit a doc without having to hassle to grab a laptop
Now though note 8 is just a stupid thing simply because samsung has become rich enough not to care or the bribing business has ruined it

I voted for 16:9. With the new ratio 18:9 or even 19:9 etc, the brands now claim they offer 6 inches phones which are actually 5+ something.
