They've said it last year they know they can't compete at flagship level, that's why they're going down the (upper) midrange level. They will return, but they didn't say when. I'd say when they can start adhering to GPL.

Geric.770, 07 Jun 2018AI... Yeah I don't need that feature anyways. You don't need it until you use it (you'll be forced to anyway, at least for some features). AI is not just about scene recognition in camera, AI is about computer (your phone) learning things around. AI battery optimizations, for instance, learns behavior of how you use your phone, when do you use it much less (i.e. when you're sleeping) so it can turn off many things during the time to conserve battery. AI result is specific for every user, since we all know there's no one size fit all algorithm to satisfy everyone. Anyway, AI is already there even before the NPU hype (NPU just helps faster execution and less battery consumption). What do you think your fingerprint sensor do so it can recognize your fingerprint even if it doesn't 100% match the same position and/or condition when you register it? That's AI. Your face unlock even without the 3D mapping? That's AI. Google recognizing your voice and understanding your voice query? That's another AI. Playing game vs computer? Who's that computer? AI.

pl2rts, 07 Jun 2018Yes Snapdragon 8 series needs rival from Mediatek with lower price like AMD for Intel. They're not able to sell it...
They try 2 times...with X30 and mt6595...each Time, they fail!
Intel fails too with Atom Z3580...even if PowerVr6430 on it was better than Adreno (I think it was Adreno 330 if I remember)

Abuse of dominance linked to intellectuel property...that's how it World!
Qualcomm's got CDMA and LTE licences.
If OEM don't buy them these licences, they can't sell any phone. It's intellectuel property, they can't buy it from anyone else.
Qualcomm raise the price of licences, to reduce the price of Snapdragon.

Imagine a phone that costs 800dollars...Qualcomm will earn 40 dollars (5% patents fee) only with licences, without providing any hardware.
Soc itself will cost about 60dollars
Mediatek must make benefits with hardware.
Qualcomm needn't...
For exemple in 2016, about 80% of Qualcomm's benefits comes from licences, not from soc!

It's very hard to sell 4g soc. Intel, NVIDIA, Broadcom, Texas instruments, St-microelectronics stopped this business!
It's nearly impossible to sell high-end soc.

Some courthouses condamned that behavior (in China, Korean, Taiwan, Europe). But that doesn't stop the business!

I wish they just paired it with a much stronger GPU. P60 rivals SD 660 in performance. Now if they paired it with a better Mali GPU, we would be in business.

suarez92, 07 Jun 2018I talked about AI, not that MIDRANGE PHONE should have it. And AI doesn't live up my expectations ok?
Camera boosts the saturation instead of tuning the right settings on current object.
Battery AI technology? EMUI's strict background work is working better than ever before.
And yeah, I won't ever consider any AI capabilities unless this is a norm feature in the future.
Peace.

Also, having Master AI turned on seriously increases the saturation on the photo on current objects, which I don't like it a lot.

Geric.770, 07 Jun 2018AI... Yeah I don't need that feature anyways. You would be surprised how good is to have AI. For example at camera, when I wanna take a snippet with my Mate 10 Pro, camera recognizes nature, plant, person, cats, etc and optimizes scene for that one focused object. Also battery optimization is pretty good with AI. You should consider that.

Instead of just introducing mid-range SoC after SoC they should invest some money for a true high-end ship with better support. This QC monopoly has to stop.

Helio P65 confirmed? Naming aside, I hope it has better open source code like Qualcomm with their CAF. Mediatek are a hostile company against GPL regulations. Hope they change that attitude soon. Reason why I prefer Qualcomm over Mediatek are it's open arms to developers, making it way easier to support the phone even if the manufacturer has stop any update on it.
