The fingerprint is "safer". Face scanning is indirectly harming your eye (your retina to be specific) as it has to briefly shine a laser/infrared beam to authenticate the user and may prove inaccurate due to challenges in a low-light environment.

For the vast majority of cases, this isn't a problem and shouldn't have any long-term health effects as it's done at such low levels but is still a small threat (I work as a optometrist).

    Finger print reader for fast unlock without looking at the phone, plus the nice gestures.
    Face unlock for unlocking without holding the device, like when cooking, to save battery when not looking.
