I think the fact the phones are having issues of thermal throttling similar to laptops with gtx 10 series laptops just says they processors are too powerful for the space constraints given, do we really need these powerful chips in our phones?

We cannot blaming xiaomi too for throttling heat issue. Maybe dual gps cause it. I understand now why the benchmark score be so low like sd835 score on mi8. Iphone x has the same problems with throttle heat too. My friend told me so when he playing heavy games in the first 10 minutes that makes the iphone x so laggy. My big question, do the gsmarena check how many celcius degrees when mi8 having the topest thermal issue? Is it just warm, hot or very hot like the old sd810 chipset?

Yeah...you think the throttling is bad here; check notebookcheck's findings on the Galaxy S8 and S9 pair...

You need to remember that Mi Mix 2s has worse battery life than Mi 8. Is it due to unmanaged thermal problem in Mi Mix 2s?

Anonymous, 01 Jul 2018My Xz premium has graphite layer instead of heat pipes used by some devices. It gets heavier... moreNot to mention, it is powering a 4K HDR screen most of the time!

It was a smart internal design by Sony. But people are way too judgemental, and judging it as a whole as they see it on the outside only.
I assure you that this design will be employed on other smartphones, but Sony won't get any credit for it, for at least being the first to use it.

This is why the development of gaming phone is important because it promotes the improvement of heat management since gaming phones tasks and stresses the SoC more and for a longer time.
I hope the heat pipes of the Xiaomi Black Shark trickle down to other models of Xiaomi phones.

leledumbo, 01 Jul 2018It's interesting since Mix 2S seems to go full throttle instead. Does it produce higher heat o... moreAnandtech review of Mix 2S apprently put it in the same ballpark as Snapdragon 835, consistently beaten in CPU test and avg. sustained GPU test by Pixel 2 XL. Granted, the Pixel has better power and thermal management due to EAS implementation. Apparently Xiaomi's phone internal design got budget cut so they couldn't afford better design or build for better thermal headroom.

I'm not an expert, but I think a bigger heatsink and metal back might've given top performance.
For all I care, they could've swapped a 710 in there, 70% of the 845 performance, but with a much lower price.

Every phone has throttling when testing in above normal room temperatures!

My wifes even couldn't use her Iphone X gps apps(waze,maps,...),because her device was to hot today!

Lol, this looks like a apologist article from GSMArena unduly justifying the poor thermal design incorporated in Mi8.
Why is that no other phone is applying the same technique if it is so good for phone's internals ?
The one and only fact is that Xiaomi seriously messed it up and has launched an iPhone X copycat that is poor in real performance. Just 5 minute of test made it heat up, throttle and loose performance. And that showcases real world performance.
Nobody uses phones just for 5 minutes and put them down.
OnePlus comparison shows what a properly designed phone is.
