I was among those who thought rear mounted FP scanner is stupid and difficult to use. But then, I was issued a Samsung Galaxy Note8 by my carrier and, surprisingly(!), I tend to unlock my phone as soon as I hold it, without having to consciously look for the FP scanner. Now it seems that the rear mounted FP scanner turned out to be a very "natural" location for me. Now, I have changed my views - the bottom front is indeed the most natural place for my thumb (as traditionally done), BUT the upper rear third is also where my forefinger sits most naturally!

But whether I would like to have it under my screen... I haven't really thought about.

pt020, 09 Jul 2018Sony moved from the best place to the back ... stupid. It doesn't make them different from the rest when it comes to fingerprint sensor placement, really hope Sony can try and patent the side-mounted fingerprint sensor again. I mean, it is the most convenient placement in my own opinion...

I have a phone with FPS on the front, and until I had to use a phone with FPS on the back I thought I wouldn't mind a FPS on the back, but I find is so much more convenient when you are at your desk and you can just unlock without lifting the phone.
Under the screen FPS is not enough reliable right now, but I think it will become soon enough, and since it can be larger, it could work without needing very much precision, and that will make it very convenient.

Zenodroid, 09 Jul 2018Back fps. Biggest con : need to be picked up every time, and you can't just have your phone... moreIndeed, slipped my mind :)
And regarding your other comment, good phone covers have an opening with tapered edges so it's not that annoying to unlock the phone.

Anonymous, 08 Jul 2018How can it be better located at the back? I just dont get it! When your phone is on a table, ... moreSome phones also have this fps mounted as a backside button. Which you can conveniently use as a button to toggle eg. the flaslight or as a shutterbutton for the (front-)camera or grab a screenshot.

Some seem to forget that some manufacturers used to make the back fps also a button. Like with the Honor 8. You can program it to open upto 3 apps or use 3 functions using single click, double click and click+hold.

In my on case it is set to click to toggle the flashlight and clock+hold to grab a screenshot. Which us much more convenient than unlock phone, swipe down from top, press flashlight toggle.

If a back fps is like this then I prefer a backside fps. Otherwise I couldn't care less as long as my phone has no notch, notification led and an ir-blaster.

Best fingerprint scanner is and will be an actual home button below display(not under). However, due to the full front display trend, I would have it on the side. Because tables, car window mounts and other places in which a rear mounted fingerprint will be useless.

How about... No security at all?

I once forgot my phone in a bar and an employee (no security on my phone at the time) texted a friend of mine and I went back and got it back. That would not have happened if it was locked down.

Maybe we're all being too paranoid and should believe in humanity to do the right thing? Maybe it's time to ask why such measures of security are even necessary. I can remotely inactivate my phone if it goes lost if I choose to. Or wait for a "good Samaritan" to contact me, which happened.

I also once found a lost phone and returned it to to the owner. It was unlocked, otherwise I would not know who it belonged to. She was grateful to get it back.

After owning a Nex S i can say the fingerprint reader was horrible ,1 out of every 10 tries worked ,If you were outside during the day may as well just put the 6 digit code in cause it never once worked outside during the day.

still prefer fs on home button or power button (side)

I don't care if my phone have thick top and bottom bezel (like OnePlus 5)
