Side-mounted fingerprint scanner is the best.
I need to use those under the screen fingerprint readers in my workplace, they are terrible. They are slow, inconsistent, fail a lot. I had to contact tech support many times and have had the fingerprint reader bypassed because it simply fails. Until this type of fingerprint reader really gets more precise and faster, I would never want it on my phone. At the moment, awful technology.

For now, rear FPS is still reliable.

Any issues on new methods of FPS placement need to ironed out before implementation.

Yes, Front In-display would be cool IF it works like a capacitive, effectiveness needs to be tested with a tempered glass screen protector.

Side placement maybe viable, but only if this doesn't create a weak point in drop protection:

In a small smartphone is better rear mounted but in a big smartphone is better in the front.

Biggest con : need to be picked up every time, and you can't just have your phone laying front up and unlock it.

Why not at the front under the display and behind.

Hmm... Based Mi8 and Mi8 EE, Mi 8EE has smaller Battery size despite larger FPS sensor. So if its has smaller under display FPS is okay.

I dont mind about FPS sensor much since if its works well.

Yes, no everybody wants to be in the race of "who has the biggest screen to body ratio". Some people still prefer function over form.

I rather Front mounted, then side mounted can come second

I was talking about a free app: xposed edge. Add gravity box to the mix and you've got huge gesture customizations, but, and let me phrase it the way you do, I doubt you know what root is :)

Also, with fingerprint gestures you don't have to touch the screen to move between gallery photos (i.e. When you're showing your favorite pet photos to your friend), so your hand doesn't get in the way.

There are reasons for back fingerprint scanners until in display arrived.
SPACE was main concern while front/side/back have same fault: their removal will tend one step closer to better water resistance in longer TIME of use.

In display solved the problem for many people who are thumb convenient, their fingerprint is not readable for many reason and again thumb has more space which result in some how fingerprint recognition.

This tech is not flawless, when the chip inside the display lose functionality, it would be more difficult to swap the reader than other methods.

by the way, this will result in better water resistance and force manufacturers to develop more suitable touch screen to interact under water or with wet surface.

The on screen of course. It's the future. Saying u want on the back is like saying u want the android hard keys back. Remember those early android days? Just clunky looking.
