Based on my readings..
Back placed:
Pros:
- convenient placement
- fast and somewhat accurate
- has nice gestures so you don't always block the screen with fingers.
- easy to replace.
Cons:
- easily scratched
- not always reachable for some.
Under the screen:
Pros:
- Hidden
- protected by glass
- Brag material
Cons:
- less accurate
- a bit slower
- harder to replace or fix
- no gestures
- possible higher battery consumption.
I say PUT BOTH!
We then can have best of two worlds *thumbs up*
How can it be better located at the back? I just dont get it!
When your phone is on a table, is it convenient to always have to pick it up to access it ?
Some people say its better because your fingers are always on the back but Im pretty sure you also have to put your fingers on the screen in order to use that phone.
For me these fingerprint scanners dont work. They only work after i have set them on in settings and next day my hand are either dry or little bit sweaty and it wont work.
In-display fingerprint scanners are costly and hard to repair, so if there is a lot of space on the back of the phone why we need in-display fingerprint?? Fingerprint on the back is the great decision
Side mounted fingerprint scanner is the best option. Sony was on a great track but for those pesky patents that prevented them from implementing it in the US.
there isnt really a discussion here.
there needs to be a fingerprint reader and thats it. doesnt matter where it is.
the only thing against indisplay is maybe added cost for repair
Physical front fps, or nothing! Lifting up your phone 200 times a day, because of the back fps is far from natural. Under screen fps is just as fast as pin code.

An "in-display fingerprint scanner" would have been awesome if a "fingerprint smudge-resistant screen" accompanied it. Would love to see that in the future.
Nobody like a screen full of smudges and this pushes (at least) me a bit backward from going forward with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

However, rear fingerprint sensor is... moreSide mounted is easier to reach with the thumb but it doesn't help with handedness. Whereas front mounted makes it a non-issue. It's also comfortable whether you use your phone with one or both hands. And you can use it while setting your phone down on a surface so you can unlock it without picking it up. It's loads more flexible than either a side-mounted or rear-mounted setup.
Vic4BBM, 08 Jul 2018Ergonomically Side mounted is best option. Next best is back of phone.
Under screen is just a... moreYour opinion is terrible.
On topic: under display is the way to go. Once the tech is mastered, it'll make all other fps modules obsolete.
In-display is great if it actually worked more accurately. However, rear fingerprint sensor is the norm now. Side mounted is good too. But i wonder why side mounted fps not popular? Is there a disadvantage? Hard to implement? It actually looks more practical. It completely solves accidental touch on camera lens and issue of it being 'too high' or 'too low' positioning.
I always hated back fingerprint sensors, you don‘t even see where your finger is.
side mounted is a solution but i think LG has it right with double tap screen to wake it, then just key in a pin or pattern.
In-Display, because its the best accessable and most ergonomic spot. The best way was One Plus did it on the OP3(T). But since we have bezelless displays, in-display is a good substitution.
Front mounted finger print for sure. Side its just not good. Looks like another usekless button and having it at back of the phone means difuculties unlocking it with a risk your hone can drop when using onehanded.
And in case of underscreen Fingerprint scanner.
Well you know screen broke your scanner broke you wont enter o your phone anymore.
such a cool feature to have that in display fingerprint scanner :)
and i hope they will make transparent phones as well...ive been waiting for it since then...not by the use of the camera to make it transparent, but the screen to be transparent when the phone is not in use :)
