Also, 4S is likely targeting early 4 adopters and late 3GS adopters that did not make the move to 4. It may not be a major jump in hardware, but the 4S fits in nicely to the Iphone's product lifecycle. Having moved to Windows Phone 7, I can see why more multi cores and bigger screen is not neccessarily a good thing. Its nice to have but not neccesary.

As a Nokia N8 owner and former user (now relegated to being a digicam and GPS device), I can only say the N8 camera is really impressive if shots are taken in the right conditions, and the N8 has a high tolerance of what constitutes good conditions. But its not always the best. I sometimes find my Omnia 7 5MP takes as good as if not better shots in some situations, particularly if you don't want over exposure from the Xenon flash (which unlike a DSLR there's no muffler). And the N8's compression is just excessive. 12MP sensor generating a 1.5MB jpeg? But what really surprises me with the Iphone 4S camera is the amount of fine detail it retains, coming from a mobile phone sensor. Really very very impressed. So while the N8 is king of the hill, in most day-to-day use, the Iphone 4S will still be impressive. Just the N8 is proven and produces more consistent results. You put an N8 and Iphone 4S in low light, chances are the N8 will win. Take the same sample shots with the N8, again it is likely to win. But taking a picture of your friends, pet, family, etc, chances are both camera do a good job. For the record, I also own a DSLR.

what a silly comment, everyone knows that N8 has best phone camera out there, so it's interesting that you used word "even". Also Why N8 camera is good because it has big camera parts. You just can't put that kind of camera into iPhone case, or any new thin smartphones. You know N8 has that extra thing coming out of the phone and that's not good thing.
And what you are talking about, those photos looks very good! They get good comment's all over the net.

I think Nokia N8 has a better cam on board
12 MP, 4000x3000 pixels, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, Xenon flash, 1/1.83'' sensor size, ND filter, geo-tagging, face detection, 720p@25fps (720p@30fps via an update)
but iPhone4S will takes better videos with 1080p@30fps, LED video light, video stabilization
but when it come to night shooting?
the LED Flash is sooooooooo boor compared to the Xenon Flash

The images don't look that stunning at 1:1.
Smartphone cameras are still toys and slow compared to real cameras. Recent micro 4/3 cameras give much better photographic results in comparison.

Let's be real now, why all this bla bla bla about we were expecting an iphone 5??
If you're a real apple fan, you would have known that there will not be a new designed iphone 5.
After the iphone 3G comes the 3GS, same happen with the iphone 4 now.
After the iphone 4S you can expect a new design, and new specs also.

Pictures taken from my sgs2, dont look as stunning as promotional ip4s pics, but im not a photographer and used no flash, tripod or photoshop. All settings in auto. I guess you like it

Like Apple said last night megapixels doesn't mean everything, android fans are so well brainwashed that megapixel marketing talk that they really think more megapixels mean better images. "iPhone 4s only 8mpix camera, WOW android phones had that year ago" c'mon, you only look stupid saying things like that. If you compare it to sonyericsson or nokia phones that's ok, they both does very good photos and this iPhone4s (thanks to sonyericsson exmor R) going to get same level or even past, well see.

Straight comparisons are going to be more and more difficult, due to the different philosophies. Apple is not in the tech specs race, not that their hardware is bad at all, it will be as fast, if not faster than SGS2 in some aspects.
While the Android OEMs are all in the feature list war. Apple is taking a different route, and focusing more on the user experience. It was slightly obvious before, but Siri really puts it out there now.
I can already see myself using it in the car, asking conversion questions for currency, weight etc. Eliminating that one extra step, makes a big difference.
As always, this is not for everybody. I do however, see a lot of potential for Apple in the field of disabled users, those who are blind for example.

the changes are good but the most important thing is unchanged: display is the same. they could very easy to put a little bigger display with 16:9 instead of 16:10 aspect, with 1-2 mm higher and 5 mm longer than actual size, with amoled technology. in the dimension diagonal race, the diagonal and type of the display is a real challenge and a very important poin of sale. they will loose very much because of the same display
