If its native pixel size is 0.8μm shouldnt combining four into one result in 3.2μm pixels and P20 Pro bining results in larger 2.0μm pixels
It should help sony's HDR in stills and videos. Premium samples lose in low light hdr stills to p20pro, even if its not final sw,...
Wow, the possibilities with this sensor and another are almost limitless. I said that we need a 48MP smartphone sensor for creating great Low Light images a little before the Huawei P20 came out. Would love to see comparisons of this sensor with that one.
A Smartphone with this and 4 other sensors could easily beat every smartphone ever created. 2 Super Bright 12MP 1/2.3" and larger sensors and 2 High Res 24MP 1/2.3" Sensors could be a Smartphone Superpower. I am curious why this Sensor doesn't have DRAM though. It could have helped enable 60p at Full Resolution or even 5k (12MP) at 120fps or 4k at 240fps. That could have been super helpful for HDR and also HDR Video with some superb dynamic range. With this kinda 5 Camera setup, it could also do 10x Zoom with almost no visible loss in quality. And also some absolutely Stellar Low Light (ISO 51200).
If this had DRAM, with fast processing and pixel binning alone, it could do wonders with processing low light and zoom.
I can also imagine this with 2 other sensors, one large 12MP 1/2.3" and larger and one 24MP 1/2.3" and larger sensor. That combination alone could be great for low light and atleast 4x Zoom.
Anonymous, 23 Jul 2018This..... High Megapixels means HIGHER RESOLUTIONS!!! Ofcourse you wont notice the difference ... moreExactly what I was saying the bigger megapixel is better and actually you will notice the difference because it will fix some areas in the low light when it comes to details that's why the they are not opting for bigger megapixels.
Before Nokia and Sony used it then the industry forced their way to small but now Huawei reopened that door and Sony doing it again and honestly it's better you get large megapixels

I don't get it !
Why put 48 MP on a camera, if you are going to bin them into 12 MP photos anyway ?
Wouldn't a 12 MP of 1.6 um size actually catch more light ??

Ofcourse you wont notice the difference between 12mp and 24-48mp on puny screens but upload their images on a Laptop/PC Monitors/TV's that have High Resolution like 4k UHD you'll see the difference. Hence Professional Photographs opt for High Mp Cams.
Anonymous, 23 Jul 2018Lol samsung fans be like 12MP is enough, all they care about is infinity display and they woul... moreNot a Samsung fan, but i'd take a 12mp noise free image over a noisy 48mp any day.
It is only recently, with the latest 19mp sensors on XZ2 and XZ2 Premium, where Sony has shown that in a smartphone market, it's possible to have a good image quality and a high resolution at the same time. Before that, all the 16mp Samsungs, 21mp Sonys, and others, were horrendous, and current 12mp Sony's sensor became the sweetspot for most flagships.
Huawei's 40mp camera isn't really any sharper than 12mp cameras found in most top end phones. Reduce the amount of light and Huawei's camera begins to produce lots of noise, with heavy noise reduction destroying all of the fine detail.
Nokia 808 Pureview/Lumia 1020 says high!!!!

Imagine those 48mp with sony's hdr stacking and sharpening...should be sharper even with same resolution as p20pro and it got more...
Add then tele lens or monochrome sensor and its enough.
Lol samsung fans be like 12MP is enough, all they care about is infinity display and they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 12MP and 48MP because they're either blind or assume their display gives clear image.

Yes I am a fan but I am also speaking logic and I'm looking into a hater since how your answering others in a raw. :)
The small megapixels and the large megapixels are 2 faces of the same coin, specially, if you give them right circumstances. But the lower megapixel has a downgrade which is you cannot view them in very large monitor or TV besides the larger megapixel can be cropped but not the small megapixels.
sadh, 23 Jul 2018Nokia had 1.15micron pixel size on 1/1.1" 41mp in 2012. Too bad they cant improve it now.Was expecting someone to mention Nokias old 1 pic a minute junk phone...

Soccer T, 23 Jul 2018There is no comparison. ISOCELL was never in their level. I don't know if it is true or not but I heard the ISOCELL was a Sony technology and Samsung bought from them. I guess the name was Samsung's but there is some tech inside it Sony sold them.
Anonymous, 23 Jul 2018They could have kept 1.4um pixel size and put a bigger sensor. That would have been actual, pr... moreTrust me they're not wasting a thing. They see something else and they do it, they take different approaches which makes them special not like the other companies who does every exact thing in every method.
The bigger mega pixel gives more detail than the small ones. Even if you zoom in or crop it, it will give a better results not the 12mp or the 10mp.
Want to see colors using that sensor, also how it recover pattern, huawei's 40mp camera made one look like from 10mp res, as opposed to the rest and even more to its monochrome camera recovering it in all glory(no rgb phone camera could).
Not to forget grass.
But finally some sharp output, had enough of blurry 12mp. Kind of reminds supersampling in lumias, but those were also great in daylight(ordinary bayer filter)
