Stupid selfie cameras it's completely useless, those social slaves taking pictures non stop it's just ridiculous, what we need just basic selfie one for video calls and that's it. To put those 20 megapixels cameras with tiny sensors and promote selfies everywhere is horrible and stupid just no more just make back cameras good

Is not about what camera is more important, it's about what features it should have.
Imo, bokeh, manual (JPG and RAW) and HDR should be available on both cameras.
And manual controls with 30+ seconds of exposure and ISO from 50 to 3200.
And obviously the rear camera is more useful. Lol.

If there's an option to choose other features then front camera I'll pick that, I.e proper stereo speakers, or even full screen (assuming if earpiece can go underneath display)

I'm not a frequent front camera user but I think the better front camera is the one with enough wide angle and "infinity" focal point to cover a small group of people and/or to keep what is behind us focused. I can live with a phone without a front camera for sure, specially if is a crappy one, but a good one becomes handy from time to time.

Back one, period. Without the back mounted camera there shouldn't exist the front too. Indeed the only reason why front cameras exist is because no one can capture a good photograph of themselves without watching themself first. It's duty is mainly complementary to the back mounted one. But chinese nonsense like Vivo with their phones claimed to be "selfie killer" can't understand this. The back camera should the most important one to capture images. Front mounted ones should capture "good" images but shouldn't be better than back ones.

Till then, my Canon DSLR beats every phone out there.
Also, selfies are mainly used by fb sheeps. Useless.

pure specs and performance of cameras in phones will give you answer. The biggest difference is in p20pro and xz2, whose selfies are a dust in comparison to the front be it hw or real output.
that be8ng said, its funny question, of course is back camera most important one, even if selfie go its use, its not impossible replacing it with one on the back thats also superior in quality. Of course its troublesome and its great to have selfie, but for it to be more important? Maybe for those who use more selfie than back one, not for the rest who can do the better selfies using better hw on the back, nor for companies making selfie cameras with lower performance.

Still, the only two thing that smartphone can't beat with the real camera : Sensor and Lens.
Something that you can't pretends to don't want to care.
