Given their past record of tracks, they never seem to have focused on providing at least one major update for their mid range and budget devices.

Whatever the SoC is, software updates is depends to OEM, not to SoC. Remember The Original Android One that using Mediatek SoC but has fast software updates?
In XDA, They say Project Treble on Android Oreo makes we can make costom ROM even without SoC's Source Code.
On SD, we must wait it and on MTK we must buy it. But it is not a problem anymore.

Things they should upgrade: replace the plastic cover with metal/glass, jump to usb type c, water resistant
