There's no proof of it, and I can't trace the money, but trust me, that's how it is! They also own 73 % of your apartment and some of your relatives. Again, I can't prove anything, but that's what China does!
Look, your conspiracy theories of "China owns them! There's no proof of it but TRUST ME!" doesn't really fly. HMD remains Finnish with very close ties to Nokia Corporation, founded and run by the former Nokia VP and with investments from European-based venture capital.

You think Switzerland hosts some of the biggest financial centers in the world only for that reason? I'm sure if you think a little further, the picture becomes clearer to you.
Buying out an established but dormant brand name is as Chinese as an investment gets. There are several examples in the same industry all the way from Blackberry, Palm and Alcatel (which is owned by the real Nokia Oyj).

And als... moreAh yes, of course, China must be laundering all the money via the Swiss venture capital company Ginko Ventures, so that nobody can trace their investments!
Except... wait... the Chinese investments into HMD aren't hidden at all. They just happen to make up a lesser part of the total investments.
I can make you an excellent tin-foil hat if you want. It sounds like you want one.

And also, are you implying its Jean-Francois Baril’s own money he is in charge of? Please think of something a bit smarter to say.
Anonymous, 02 Aug 2018HMD Global is registered in Finland but also 100% running on Chinese money. You're the first person I've heard call the Swiss Franc "Chinese money". Next up you people will claim that Jean-Francois Baril is the most common name in China.

What makes them diff... moreIf you want to talk about where the money comes from for HMD, it's mainly Ginko Ventures, the Geneva-based (Switzerland) venture capital company owned by the HMD founder and ex-Nokia VP Jean-Francois Baril.
So as I said, OnePlus is Swedish, Xiaomi is Indian and Nokia is from Greenland. Or whatever nonsense you want to make up on the spot.
1) Samsung - 19.9%
2) Oppo - 15.4% (Oppo + Vivo + OnePlus)
3) Huawei - 15.1%
4) Apple - 11.5%
5) Xiaomi - 9.2%
6) Lenovo - 3.1% (Lenovo + Motorola)
7) LG - 2.9%
8) HMD - 1.3%
9) Tecno - 1.2%
Sub total - 79.6%
10) Others - 20.4%
Now by Demographics:
China - 47.0% (Oppo + Huawei + Xiaomi + Lenovo + HMD +Tecno)
Korea - 24.0%
America - 12.0%
Japan - 8.0%
India - 5.0%
Europe - 4.0%
And by Ecosystem:
Google - 58.0%
Apple - 12.0%
China - 25.0% (Android without Exclusive Google Services)
Other - 5.0%
So there is cause to be concerned with the amount of control and power that China wields over the smartphone market, which is the current leading field in technology.
FinnishInquisition, 02 Aug 2018Actually Xiaomi is Indian and OnePlus is Swedish. Nokia is from Taiwan. All of them are run with chinese money. So they are technically the same. What makes them different is just the brand sticker.
...n[o]tchia, 02 Aug 2018Yeah. Oneplus, oppo, vivo, xiaomi, and the current nokia are chinese brothersActually Xiaomi is Indian and OnePlus is Swedish. Nokia is from Taiwan.
Anonymous, 02 Aug 2018Why not Vivo....all three from same parent companyYeah. Oneplus, oppo, vivo, xiaomi, and the current nokia are chinese brothers
Lightning McQueen, 02 Aug 2018Sony and HTC are not in the list which I know that, but where is the OnePlus sale in the top 1... moreOnePlus sells only a single smartphone at any given time. While the sales are good from a single phone's perspective, they aren't enough to outnumber the shear volume of low end phones shipped by other brands, which make the bulk of their shipments.
Nokia5 , 6 and nokia 7 are selling great ,great phone for great price .
Oppaii, 02 Aug 2018Thanks to nostalgic people.Nop, thanks to nostalgic people, HMD is in top (3) in sales, but with feature phones like 3310, banana phone, and similar nostalgic names, and design from 20 years back :D
Those smartphones from Nokia, buying people who are used some of Lumias i guess, or maybe some of Nexus users (because of the price, Pixels is more exp, and stock Android). Another, and only solusion is Lenovorola (Mootorola) phones, with similar UI but, also cheaper price.

Yes LG is LG is the 6th, but if you look sales of this OEM in smartphone and year after year decreasing, 2019 is not good for LG smartphones. Those chinese OEMs take a control, over LG, Sony and HTC, because they have lower priced phones with similar or better spec. Huawei/Honor/Nova is number one in that.. LG needs to change strategy if they want to stay (at least) in top 10 in 2019. not some long time ago, LG was in top 5.. world wide..

HMD Global Oyj is Finnish, registered and headquartered in Finland with a ton of ex-Nokian staff, and listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. It was also founded by Jean-Francois Baril, who was the Senior VP of Nokia back in the day.
On top of that, Nokia Corporation have a presence on the board of directors at HMD via the Nokia Technologies president and have a final say in what devices gets the green light. Nokia Technologies are also the key patent provider for the patents used by HMD. The only difference between the old "Nokia Devices and Services" and the modern "HMD" is the corporate structure.
