I don't like the notch and don't have it but it would never keep me from buying a notched phone if it's otherwise great.

It's like saying the link you feel sorry for someone expecting a human(homo sapiens) because you're better than a monkey(one step in the right direction.
Some of us can see through this, care about the end result, and we are expecting the real thing. (Don't mean to sound condescending)

What Apple did was to extended parts of the screen around the earpiece, camera, and sensors, in order to make use of all the wasted, blank areas on the front of the phone. This is in no way a notch, it is an extension of the screen.

Smaller bezels mean a phone can have a larger display, the argument as I understand it is that some commands fall in the selfie/ earpiece area
Rather than say this stolen area is sacrosanct all options are being put forward.
The display size is the diagonal here are three phones 6.1 inches 6.0 inches 5.8 inches using pythagorus, the display height inches are 4.88, 4.80 and 4.64. The difference is 0.24 inches between 6.1 and 5.8 inches phone or 6.096 millimetres

The area added by extending past the rectangular then say the notch is wasted and now needs to be reclaimed is to reverse the argument.
IMO more fault are probable utilising the notch
