I personally only like clear cases, because on a phone like the Huawei p20 pro that I'm typing on, I want to see the shift from blue to purple on the back, which is why I brought the phone in the first place, otherwise I would've gotten plain black or blue. But of course, being a phone so expensive, I don't want the glass breaking on me with a accidental drop
Dependance on the phone. My Galaxy S8plus will break if hou look at it wrong, so for that yes. My previous Motorola, two years, not a scratch, so no. Unfortunately you always find out when it’s too late.
If you are going to buy expensive original case then your phone will look good even with case.
Phones are more then just a phones nowadays, it is mini computer. And prices are going up as well all the time so it's better to protect your device if you want to keep it for more than one year.
Finally you will not be able to sell your device also if it will have scratches and dents.
Well I think that if I had a Huawei P20 Pro in Midnight color, I wouldn't put a case on it because it is so unique and not everyone has it, but when you have an iPhone in white or black, everyone has the same. Putting a case to protect (and I am not talking about the ugly thin plastic transparent ones) is a good way to show you personality while making your iPhone unique.
Well, in a country like Iran where the price of a midranger, say Redmi Note 5 Pro, is two times the salary of a typical person, you can't risk falling your phone at all. protective case plus screen protector is mandatory.
here is my opinion
question- necessary?
answer- no.
but i apply cases only on glass phones because "glass is glass and glass breaks". also it depends on the brand of phone you use. xiaomi, huawei, oppo..etc will get hideous generic cases mass imported from alibaba whereas apple, samsung, pixel get great cases from the brand themselves, uag, spigen, incipio, speck..etc.
it depends on phone. for example Honor 6 or Honor 8 lite (2017) or LG Q6 after 3 days without case get look of a 3 year old phones. but some other phones are very durable for example my Honor 4C after 3 years has a few scratches!
i mostly agree with Yordan. generally, no accessory should be "necessary" to use a device. that includes phone cases. what's the point in premium materials, refined design elements and even foregoing of function and ergonomics for the sake of looks if you're just going to stuff it in a protective case? if that's deemed a necessary precaution then i think those precious flagship phones have inherently flawed designs and maybe we should just return to cheaper and more durable plastic with grippy textures and ergonomic curves.
not saying that cases are stupid and no one should use them, it just shouldn't be deemed necessary and taken for granted that people do
I need a case due to the fact every phone i buy is as slippy as a bar of soap.
I only usually buy the soft gel cases so iv got grip of my phone and it doesnt slide off things.
i never used to bother with cases when phones were made of plastic as they had more grip.
if a phone maker wants its phone shown off make it matte not shiny, i really hate all-glass phones. make the sides and back of something else.
Huawei provide a case with alot of their phones, very thoughtfull imo
Shanti Dope, 05 Aug 2018The thing is, can your so-called "discipline" help to fix your phone once accident happens?? ... moreThe question is whether or not cases are "necessary". The answer is simply no. But if you are one who waits for accidents to happen then by all means use one.
who can answer if your iphone x body broken because your mistake like dropped it and you not install the case on it
Anonymous, 05 Aug 2018If a phones glass... it needs a case 100% If a phones metal... then its okay without a caseMetal phones need a case too, last thing you want is a permanent dent.
Well, after 3 years and countless of key-scratches and drops on my Spigen case, my Note 4 looks flawless than my friends who didn't don a case. I can still resell this or give it to a younger family member as their beater phone.
It's better being safe than getting your camera scratched by something. Case for me.
Anonym, 05 Aug 2018That is indeed the point, for some people phones aren't really disposable but rather a good wh... moreTrue.
The only problem with the cheaper mid-range phones is often they get bogged down and get slow later during their use span. Mostly from app updates which tend to get more and more bloated (YouTube for example used to be no more than 10MB in app size a few years ago, now it reaches around 100+ MB) plus some newer features tend to tax the phones SoC and RAM. Plus, security and OS patches tend to be rare if not non-existent. Of course, if you're using a cheaper phone that you plan to change yearly, that won't be a big issue for you.
Personally, I'm sticking with the buying a flagship once every two to three years, mostly because of the longer security and OS patches. Plus, they usually still work well enough even after that period. Just gonna have to live with the whole fragility thing and having to keep them in a protective case.
PeterThePanda, 05 Aug 2018With the current "dumb trend" of front and back glass phones (w/o wireless charging, which is ... moreThat is indeed the point, for some people phones aren't really disposable but rather a good which will be resold sometime later on. As the condition is everything in the used market, having a case and screen protection is just a must (to retain the highest value possible/be able to resell fast).
However, there is still some truth to the counter-argument. If you are going to keep the phone till the end of its service life (therefore won't resell it) then it really doesn't make much sense to pay extra for a more fragile "pretty" looking flagship (whose looks will be hidden away by all that protection). There are cheaper and less fragile phones available, which is a win-win for this use-case. Sure, they'll collect scuff marks over the years, but (1) they are cheaper to repair and replace; plus (2) I still find those marks less hideous (and bulky) than adding a case to flagship phones whose whole point was the ceramic build material, the hyperglazed exotic glass paint or the supposed sapphire finish.
TL;DR if you are not reselling the phone after a while, then do smarter purchases (ie. not the fragile flaships).
Yes phone cases are necessary, as companies are insistent on covering their products in wafer thin glass.
Why else would alot of these companies include cases in the box?
Anonymous, 05 Aug 2018Well, since glass is the choice of material these days, and phone prices has gone up, and so i... moreActually, the harder the glass, the more likely it'll shatter and break. Hardness has more to do with scratch resistance (see Mohs scale of hardness). However, with that hardness comes brittleness and increased likelihood of shattering when impacted. Sure, a sapphire screen will be more scratch resistant but it'll definitely be more shatter prone and less impact resistant compared to glass.
Well, since glass is the choice of material these days, and phone prices has gone up, and so is repair costs, it's better to keep them in a case. Phones these days are fragile regardless of what Corning says - various drop tests have proven it to be true. It breaks easily, attracts micro scratches even easier. If I were using a phone with aluminum material, I'd definitely use it naked. When Corning figure a way to make them less susceptible, I'll use my phone naked. Until then, anything with glass(unless it's sapphire crystal) will live in a case.
For me is to keep it as new as just bought from the shop even after ten years passed by
