Good move on Android releasing the face unlock feature on the ICS. I hope they patent it if no one did yet.

Do you or your girl friend have the famous UGG boots?
The word and the boot design originated in Australia.
It was a general term.
But some ass of a US company put a patent right to the name UGG later on.
Now the original inventor can't call their own boots
UGG without having to pay for commission.
Where is the 'prior art' theory in this?
I am very much for and support the idea of 'protecting ideas'. I'm just annoyed at companies/people taking advantage of the law for their own benefit. But that's the world we live in, and that's how lawyers make money.
Law in this current world exist NOT TO PREVENT, but to take advantage of.... Really saddening

Why are you all do upset by this??
Apple filed this patent in 2005!!!!! They didn't even have a phone out!!
If you had known that at the time you wouldn't have cared in the slightest.
Were you all upset when Apple filed for the Multi-touch patent in 2007 which they won this Summer??

Filing for patents by the way, is also as much for defence in todays patent lawsuit filled world, as well as for competition.
If Apple did not file for this patent, and Samsung did for example, what do you think would happen? Also, isnt that why Apple had to settle with Nokia in their lawsuit?
Filing patents is now an important part of the legal aspect of competition in the tech world.
Apple should file a patent for trees stealing the name apple! I guess break to unlock is the next option!!!
slimberry, 26 Oct 2011Hm... to me, I see some familiar patern to a successful company. Remember the good old SONY? I... moreThe "market" never demanded a touchscreen tablet in 2010.
But Apple made one anyway. They called it an iPad. The rest is history.
If companies simply released what the "market" desires then we wouldn't have products like the original iPhone, the Nintendo Wii or the iPad.
this is ridiculous! i hope this kind of abuse can be fought.
next time they will patent apples (you will have to pay a fee if you want to eat them) and the character "i". Prepare yourself to talk without using it, sorry usng t.
Hm... to me, I see some familiar patern to a successful company. Remember the good old SONY? It was basically dominating the market in the 70~80s possibly 90's too. They got greedy and making everything specific to their own ONLY. Sony developed so far ahead of the current market at the time (10~20 years ahead). But no one can control the future, and the world simply moved in different direction to what Sony wanted it to....
APPLE better be careful. Make what the market demands, not the other way around~~
SZ, 26 Oct 2011This is so unreasonable. will the name of the fruit on the street going to be in trouble becau... moreit has nuthin to do with the name....its apple's design....they shud profit from it....not someone else!!

You're wrong, Doom Resurrection was already released on iPhone in 2009, unless you're talking about a new game lol.
motorola first created mobile phone than apple should stop iphone why they are making phone. Sony created first digital mp3 player they never sued to others then they should also stop ipods also!
Uncle bob, 26 Oct 2011Apple maybe a massive company, but they are challenging Google, Samsung, HTC, Sony, Motorola e... moreYou think Samsung, HTC, Motorola are one big family united in hate against Apple? How naive can you be?
Competition is equally fierce amongst the Android manufacturers. Samsung was furious with the Google Motorola deal.
LG even tried to ban PS3 sales in the US as they alleged the Blu-Ray player violated their patents.
Zzzzz, nothing new here. move along.
It's stupid. Why do this. Almost all smartphones use gestures. Does this mean that every phone that will be made from here on out be legally put down because of this patent?? I don't see any other company (save for Samsung) who have attacked apple, so why does apple.
Someone, 26 Oct 2011Nope. By law the Neonode can't be affected if they had the idea before the patent was filed. ... moreAs far as I understand there is something called prior art in patent world. Basically prior art would prevent anyone from filing a patent for something that has been around for some time (years, decades, centuries, doesn't matter). That is basically preventing anyone today to file a patent for ie. wheel. So I'm not saying that Apple can sue Neonode, I'm saying that, even though Neonode may not have filed a patent for slide to unlock, they had it before Apple, and hence it should be available for everyone to use freely, that is, this patent should not have been granted in the first place. But since I'm no lawyer, but a humble engineer, I could be wrong. :)
AnonD-27748, 26 Oct 2011How greedy Apple is :D

Neonode may have been first BUT DID THEY FILE A PATENT?
Apple filed for the patent 6 years ago. They didn't even have a phone out. Did you think they were being greedy then??
useless, 26 Oct 2011Doom for iPhone and apple are nearing. Apple should not be allowed this patent as many devices... morePatent laws help defend ideas. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not so good, but that's like describing the law in general no?
The Microsoft Android patent lawsuits for example, even included patents on how to display 3G signal strength and battery life. Tell me that isn't obvious also.
The fact of the matter is, if you have an idea, you have a right to protect it, big or small, plus, you can't decide if you get the patent anyway, it is all decided by an authority, so what's the big deal.
How greedy Apple is :D
Have ever heard of Neonode N1M?
It was the first phone with slide to unlock technology.
So,Apple just hijacked this idea n claimed it as its own idea.
Here's the video of Neonode n1m:

Anonymous, 26 Oct 2011Agreed, slide to unlock is a patent held by Neonode in Sweden since 2001. I think American cou... moreTwo things:
Prove that the patent was awarded in Sweden to Neonode in 2001.
Compare the two patents and see if they affect each other.
All patents are awarded numbers and these are recognised throughout most of the world. The reason why it takes so long to grant a patent is because of the research it takes to make sure nobody had the patent earlier.
Apple maybe a massive company, but they are challenging Google, Samsung, HTC, Sony, Motorola etc... I hope these companies ban together and tell apple to stfu
