DD, 12 Oct 201890% of people who owns iPhones older than 5S don't really care about apps anymore.Well not NEW apps at the least. Those still using old devices, are most likely using them as their stable platform, and has long ago found the apps that they need to fulfil there needs.
It is the METHOD not a Brand issue. Even if my ancient Xperia (Neo) Pro could still launch the Android Market, I'm extremely unlikely to do so, so by this method it would not be counted as still running on ICS...

BiyoBiyo JunJun, 12 Oct 2018but... but.... but.... the android user said they can root their device and install custom rom... moreOf course. My Lenovo k5 plus was stuck on Android 5.1 lollipop and never got update. But now I am using Android 9.0 pie when many flagships run on Oreo. It's very smooth better than stock ROM and I am able to tweak my phone completely from UI to processor. This is why I will never buy a honor, Huawei and Nokia devices in future due to their locked bootloaders.
SBTC, 12 Oct 2018Phones auto-update installed apps on the app-store all the time. This is one of the best ways ... moreIt is (luckily) a couple of years ago I was pestered by Ios, so do not remember if it allows you to turn auto-updates off, but as you usually are not allowed to control much more than the volume level on Ios, most likely you can not turn that off either.
If not, you are right that it should be a good way to measure for the active devices connected to the internet.
If allowed it would make a LOT of sense to turn auto updates off, not to get updates to app-versions that might not work so well on your old device.
dude111, 12 Oct 2018I cant enter Google Play Store on my old xperia arc with android 2.3 because i need to update ... moreOh, I'm not comparing here. I'm just pointing out that the method for measuring is dubious - no matter the brand or OS in use.
S, 12 Oct 2018True. But the situation isn't any better with a flagship Android, either. In fact, with Androi... moreActually the situation of current Android flagships can't be compared to a low end phone like the original Moto G.
Also iOS 12 was absolutely needed fort he 5S as iOS 11 almost broke the phone and made it unusable. It funny how this very important detail is always ignored. iOS is basically a bug fix update for the very terrible iOS 11.
And to give you more perspective of how things are actually in the android world.
My Mi A1 currently runs with the September security update which also improved the performance and the responsiveness of the phone while also fixing or maintaining the salability of the battery usage.
I don't know why I would need Android 9 on this phone right now? It works perfectly as it is now and all apps are up to date(including system, google apps).
So I don't need Android 9 because 8.1 works flawlessly and there are hardly any bugs or any noticeable problems that a new OS version would fix.
Could you have said the same about the iphone 5s running iOS 11?
Where is gone bluetooth icon on iOS 12 ?

BiyoBiyo JunJun, 12 Oct 2018and they proud of it ....Don't worry. We have our own preferences, so respect their habits of doing it. :)
and then the Android Distribution Chart come, but still no Android Pie on the chart. We are buying a 800 - 900 USD for hardware only. no software support or anything, in fact many OEM doesn't allow us to unlock the bootloader even when warranty is over. so, the android device that I (or anyone using android) own basically not mine at all.
Geric.770, 12 Oct 2018That's for users who are not afraid to destroy their phones. XDand they proud of it ....
AnonD-558092, 12 Oct 2018A Moto G. With a measly Snapdragon 400. And 1GB of RAM. Just 8GB of non-expandable storage. Ab... moreTrue. But the situation isn't any better with a flagship Android, either. In fact, with Androids, it seems better to buy a cheap phone every one or two years than buy a flagship that runs out of OS and security support. One could say as long as the hardware is good, your phone will work. But security updates are important, too.
The iPhone 5s has a superior processor and was pricier no doubt, but has the same 1 GB and 16GB as a Moto G. And my Moto G has no third party app other than WhatsApp. I am not comparing a Moto G to a 5s. But any Android to any iPhone. You pay flagship prices for an iPhone and it will last you till you physically damage it. You pay flagship money for Android, you will run out of support even if your hardware is in good shape. If Android OEMs/Google/carriers re-look at their support policy, it might encourage more to buy flagship Androids. Perhaps, charge subscription for continued software and security support to those willing to pay.
There will come a time when it's not economically or environmentally feasible to keep chucking away one or two year old phones for new ones. While I abhor Apple's hardware and prices and still use Android, I do appreciate Apple's software support. I tried an iPhone SE for a week and returned it because it needed me to be completely rooted to Apple's eco-system and file-sharing and back-up policies.
