Mediatek Helio P70 will be a tough competition to Snapdragon's latest chipset!
According to the old leaks the Helio P70 was about to have the following specs:
- ARM A73 @ 2.5 Ghz
- ARM A53 @ 2.0 Ghz
- MALI G72 MP4 @ 800 Mhz
Considering that the GPU gets one more core and the CPU beats the Kirin 960 in CPU power, it is sure to say that Mediatek would kill the Kirin 710 and catch Qualcomm SD 710 on CPU.
Only if they maintain the consistance on the improvements
Qwerty2018, 18 Oct 2018Cortex A53 is indeed quite old by now, but Cortex A73 is still acceptable (NO mid-range SoC us... moreIt's :
- big.LITTLE with A57/72/73 as big cores and A53/35 as LITTLE cores
- or tri-cluster "Corepilot" on Mediatek kind or enhanced big.LITTLE with the same cores
- or DynamIQ with A75/76 as Big cores and A55 as LITTLE cores
A73+A55 seems not to be possible
In my opinion, I prefer 4A73+4A53 at 2.4ghz...it works in 16nm (kirin 960) and even more on 12nm...than 2A75+6A55 at 2.2ghz
I bet P70 will be faster than SD710.
Increased IPC on A75/Kryo 3 only lead to better single-core score on benchmark...not to faster device in daily use...
See Apple A11 with 7IPC compare to 3IPC on SD845, 4500pts vs 2400pts but not faster in daily use

Mali G72 is fairly recent GPU, who said it is outdated? Even G72 MP3 is as powerful as Adreno 512 (both in benchmark and real-world gaming performance)
I just hope that for the next Helio P series, they will use 4core Cortex A75 + 4core Cortex A55 to compete with SD710 & SD730, as well as using PowerVR like Helio X series do (It's been a year since Helio X30)
xXENDER FREAKXx, 17 Oct 2018Even the HELIO X30 though being the most buffed up chipset with a tri-cluster deca-core setup ... moreX30 has a far better GPU than P60...+4k hevc recording + better memory bandwidth
Due to patents system, it's nearly impossible to sell soc for expensive phones. It's useless for competitors to developpe high-end soc, they won't be able to sell them...
Except if you make both the soc and the phones (like Samsung, Huawei or Apple)
Not only Mediatek try two time (mt6595, X30), but Intel too with Z3580...both failed
Realistic1, 18 Oct 2018I totally agree. Most useless “innovation” ever...Wait a minute...
NNAPI is only available on Android since 8.1...
Now devs have both hardware and software to use AI.
If you've ever seen how fast face-unlock is on Helio P60, you can start to ask you questions.
Nicknam, 17 Oct 2018Why Mediatek discontinued its flagship Helio X series?
They were competitive with Snapdrag... moreThey discontinued because they can't sell it.
It's linked to Standard Essential patents.
You think X30 is cheaper...it's not necessarly the case.
Qualcomm sell patents directly to OEM, with huge benefits. It's patents like LTE or CDMA, you can't make a smartphone without that and you can't buy them elsewhere. They can sell soc without benefits. (In 2016, 80% of the Qualcomm's benefits comes from patents)
Patents fees are based on the price of the devices. The higher the devices cost, the higher the patents benefits are, the higher the cashback on soc can exist...the harder it is for competitors to sell.
Intel even discontinued all their soc for smartphones

More like Kirin 710 in term of price, with better features.
GPU and memory bandwidth will probably be behind Kirin 960, it's true.
AI will be better than 970.
Newtmas, 17 Oct 2018I'm done with A.I..Everything is a.i.,it doesn't bring any benefit actually bruhhhI totally agree. Most useless “innovation” ever...
Shadocx, 17 Oct 2018I doubt this Helio P70 will even surpass the performance of a Kirin 960.Agreed. It will matches the Kirin 710 or even 960 at best, if they still use a basically identical design as the P60 (quad-core A73+A53 combo, pretty weak GPU compared to the CPU), let alone QSD710 as they stated. Then again, it's a midrange SoC, so we can't ask for a lot more
Why Mediatek discontinued its flagship Helio X series?
They were competitive with Snapdragon 8xx series. Helio X was a slightly slower than Snapdragon 8xx, but much cheaper. Also nearly any Mediatek SoC can shutdown unused cores, while only old Snapdragons were able to do that.
My phone with Helio X20 SoC had same price as Samsung with SD410 SoC.
Mediatek needs 3 things to improve :
- increase number of GPU cores
- release source for every SoC
- continue releasing flagship helio X series
Don Hrle, 17 Oct 2018Just a kirin 970 baked in 12nm....good luck I doubt this Helio P70 will even surpass the performance of a Kirin 960.
Why they are using same gpu again ? Mali G72 is already in P60 why again ?
I'm done with A.I..Everything is a.i.,it doesn't bring any benefit actually bruhhh
