Shui8, 23 Jan 2019Conclusion:
People that disagreeing simply dont own a Huawei device.Guess you're going to ignore the part where I told you I had the device and tested it.
Placebo effect is quite a powerful thing. But facts don't care about your feelings. And the fact is there is NO EVIDENCE TO PROVE GPU TURBO ACTUALLY DOES WHAT IT INTENDS TO DO BEYOND THE MARGIN OF ERROR.
Shui8, 23 Jan 2019This is one of the example. I wont talk much, it really delivers. Honor Play got Gpu Turbo out... moreYour first link is NOT evidence.
It is anecdotal, and not statistical. It is not even professional, any 11 year old could have made that video.
In fact, he even goes to say in the video he can't compare the Kirin 970 with GPU Turbo to one without. So there goes ALL your evidence.
Also, comparing PUBG Mobile on Low Settings does NOT give you the opportunity to see the GPU pushed properly. Even so, the "GPU Turbo" shows a lot of Variance, about 30% more, all the while producing less framerate, generating alot more heat, and using more power. On top of this, I highly suspect the scenes were different, meaning the OP6 was drawing more objects on the screen and had a handicap. I suspect this because other Indian Reviewers did the same thing (knowingly/unknowingly) and were caught. So the Kirin 970 actually hasn't caught up to the QSD 835, let alone the QSD 845. The whole thing is a farce.
Please, do not fall for the Placebo Effect. Otherwise you might tell me the planet is flat, and the Sun revolves around the Earth. Something's you learn better by researching it secondhand, rather than diving into it blindly. Maybe not swimming, but definitely for surfing.
The improvements in Dolphin Emulator didn't come from GPU Turbo, it came from the developers. Same thing happened with the Exynos 8895, it was running dog-slow, then after the major update, it's running much better. Did the Galaxy S8 get GPU Turbo as well?!? Nope. Althoug the snapdragon chips run it the best because they're the only devices that have proper Vulkan implementation.
So you see I'm breaking all your misconceptions on the matter. And it's not out of spite, I really want you to forget the marketing (like a sheep, excuse the pun), and see reality like the rest of us.
Kangal, 23 Jan 2019First of all, you made a false equivalence by saying "just because you didn't test it, doesn't... moreThis is one of the example. I wont talk much, it really delivers. Honor Play got Gpu Turbo out of the box, P20 does not. On P20, Kirin 970 Mali gpu is not that good, stuttering a lot playing PUBG at highest level. After got Gpu Turbo update? Different story.
Now this is a game app called Dolphin Emulator, comparing using Kirin 970 device with & without Gpu Turbo. The FPS difference is double! Easily an 100% performance upgrade. And not to be forgotten Dolphin Emulator was not even in Gpu Turbo supported list, that means even some games not listed in it, it makes the use of the Gpu Turbo.
Now what does it means by Huawei claims that its a 60% more performance and 30% less battery usage? They never mention which game. It means its a summarize from heavy games to light games benefits from Gpu Turbo & gave a plurate score, which kinda true. There are many more review about it, & base on my own experience, it does work as promised.
There are 2 people, asked to go swimming. One person read a lot of info about how to swimming properly, research from many reference about it, but he never swim. Another person dont know exactly the proper way, no info research, just naturally swimming by himselft everyday, & he knows how. From that 2 person, which one u think will drown?

The short of it is: a "Placebo Effect" is NOT evidence to support such bold claims.
Shui8, 23 Jan 2019People should know already before buying. And its a standard to do the marketing stuff in ever... moreActually benchmark cheating is bad.
It forces the device to work beyond its parameters, only for a short-run, to artificially increase the results. And to make matters worse, its bad when the performance delta is large.
Because in battery life benchmarks Device A looks like the best, and in performance benchmarks Device A also has a higher score. So rationally thinking, you would assume you get MORE performance AND get MORE battery life. This couldn't be further from the truth. It's like using an expensive special blend of Jet Fuel in your car, which is actually harmful to the engine, and using it only when the Governing Bodies are benchmarking the car for performance figures and emissions levels: it is illegal.
And for that reason, and many more, it is why Samsung came out and apologised about benchmark cheating. This was back in 2012 I believe, and they've stopped the practice ever since. Other companies have been caught, and when the evidence of their cheating comes out.... EVERY time, they apologise and push out an update to normalise the device. Huawei was one of the worst offenders in this category.
Additionally, its not just cheating, but unsustainable short-burst performance through legitimate methods is also a problem. Mostly it comes down to low-voltage issues, and quick-wear of the battery inside. Have a look at the Exynos 9810 in the S9+, initially it seems much faster than the Apple A10 and the S9+ with QSD 845 chipset, and almost as fast as the Kirin 980, QSD 855, and Apple A11-Bionic chipsets. However, after thorough reviewing (see Anandtech and GaryExplains) and benchmarking, we can actually see its barely equal to the old QSD 835, and much slower than the likes of the QSD 845, 855, Kirin 980, Apple A10 and Apple A11. As a consumer, you have the right to know accurate the goods you are purchasing; otherwise it is deemed fraud.
...now "it's just business" or "hey, everyone else does it" are not justifiable excuses for misconduct. No, you should instead be saying:
"this is a bad thing they have done, and they should stop doing it and fix their mess, and everyone else should also strive to do better".
We want REAL and PROPER competition, not marketing trickery and pointless software cheats. We the consumers do not want to be mislead, or victims of fraud.
Shui8, 22 Jan 2019What a long sentence. U call it a scam, read info from here & there. But did u experience ... moreFirst of all, you made a false equivalence by saying "just because you didn't test it, doesn't mean its true". I also haven't been to outer space, but I do know the planet is spherical and not flat.
Secondly, I have tested it and I've barely seen any difference, however it was on a review device (not my own). I've noticed it actually caused the device to get warmer and use more battery. Normally when it reaches those temperatures, it would throttle. So as far as I can tell, the update may have improved the GPU drivers slightly and also increased the SoC thermal limit. Both of those aren't great things to boast about. And in my own testing, and virtually everyone else as well, there has not been a 60% increase in performance and 30% decrease in battery drain, which is the claims made by Huawei.
And finally, let's not forget that you're the one here making a claim. You are the one saying Huawei GPU Turbo works very well (way past the margin of error). So the onus is upon you to prove your claim. In short; SHOW ME THE EVIDENCE.
PS; My stance is not saying such improvements via software are impossible. My stance is that of skepticism, because it is highly unlikely, and calling out people and companies that exaggerate figures to an extreme point where it actually becomes a LIE. I'll even give you an example of where its possible/observed before. The case of performance increase on the same hardware via a refinement/refresh can be seen: compare the launch RX480 GPU to the RX590 GPU, have a look at the performance uplift in a title like Overwatch AND more efficient use of power.

And its a standard to do the marketing stuff in every company, its a bussiness anyway. The point is wether that stuff working as promised or not. At the moment every stuff that they throw is working as they claim. Cheated benchmarking? Yeah they been accuse 'cheated' because is the rules of 3dmark not to use performance mode in benchmarking. That 'cheated' performance actually works in real usage, u cant fake hardware limitation beyond it. Therefore starting Mate 20, they separate the Performance Mod in settings. But theorytically, when u playing games, that 'cheated' score is working in real life as its automatically triggered with Gpu Turbo. When benchmarking, yes it overheats, but when gaming for hours, i dont feel any overheat at all. And dont start about the fake camera sample in ad, believe me, every company does it, its a matter of been caught or not, marketing startegy. U should know how the camera performs in reality before buying it, not trapped from their ad.
