its a simple excuse: apple want market monopoly, and in an era where people are not spending the same amount of cash, the only way they can make money is through patent licencing.
So why not try and squeeze the life from the opposition? They know that they are threatened by the success of the competition, so what better way to gain back lost ground than by scare tactics/lawsuit infringment cases.

Ever wonder why Apple hasn't tried stopping sales in the UK? Because in the UK, you can't patent a line or piece of code. Why? Because it doesn't actually exist and can't be "invented". It's a mathematical algorithm that could be applied to multiple things...not just the thing it would be "patented" on.
